Hi everyone, I will be starting in January and would like to know when i should book my flight.. I see registration is Jan 4 to Jan 6, but the difference in the price of the ticket is about $200 bucks when comparing Jan 5th (the cheaper flight) to Jan 4th. Is it mandatory to be there all 3 days of registration? Thanks.

You should have booked your flights as soon as you were accepted to get in. You do need to be on the island before registration. I would recommend that you any new student gets on the island at least a two weeks before the start of school so that they may get better orientated with the school and St. Kitts before classes begin. It will help in a smoother transition on the Island. Good luck guys and girls, welcome to the UMHS family. Oh! yeah be nice to the ppl on your welcoming committee and you will learn alot about med school and St. Kitts

I booked my flight with AA about 4-6 days before registration. Hopefully I won't have to pay previous months rent...
Where do you plan on staying?
Make sure you set up your housing arrangements beforehand, it'll be less of a hassle and more time for you to settle in once u arrive on The Island.

I tried austin travel and it was too expensive! i got my flight from American Airlines and that was $600 something I believe, leaving from FL, stopping in Miami and from Miami to St. Kitts. And it was a round trip not a one way ticket so I can visit home after 1st semester.
That was the best deal I could find. Luggage sucks though only 50 pds per bag, I am going to have 4 bags because of my father coming with me but still i don't think that's enough.

i booked my trip with AA and i just put a random date as my 'return' date....when i find out exactly when first semester classes are over and i can come back to the states for break, i will call AA and change the return date. they told me it wouldnt be a problem. :eyebrows:
...i know the phrase 'book a trip' makes sense, but reading back on what i wrote, 'booked my trip' sounds a little funny... sorry, it's been a long day..:bored:

To whom it concerns.............to change a flight can be quite expensive, so know the details. Airlines will say "no problem," ya for them but for you it will cost an arm and leg. Make sure you know the amount. I am not an expert on traveling but my wife is. Something to look into...........Airtran always has flight deals in and out of Puerto Rico to major U.S. airports. I have asked and have been told that your return ticket can be in and out of Puerto Rico. Then all you have to do is get with one of the local airlines down in the islands and book a flight form PR to St. Kitts. I am not guaranteeing anything but just giving you another area to look at. For us it worked out. Also, Airtran likes to give away airline tickets for enrolling in an Airtran credit card. How does it work..............get an airline ticket through Airtran and then when you take off and reach cruising altitude wait for them to announce an offer for a the Airtran Credit card. Just sign up for it. My wife and I both signed up in August of 07. Just for sighing up we both received a free airline ticket. Since then we have flown free, been up graded to first class, or have received special benefits. Also, since it's a credit card each time we use the card we earn more money towards our next flight. The best thing is that if we purchase airline tickets through airtran the money counts as double points which means we are closer to receiving a free airline ticket.
Like I said earlier, look into it first. It worked for us really good. I know other airline carriers have similar offers too. Look around and make sure the money your spending on flights to and from St. Kitts is working for you and not against you. If you have questions feel free to PM me. Forums like this can be really beneficial.

just to let you know American Airlines charged me $150 to change my return date since the school just adjusted the academic calender and 2 semesters were extended by a period of a week. :x

I almost oprdered mine yesterday and thankfully I waited until today. Does AA charge any fees for checking baggage?

no they don't charge you for checking on luggage as long as you don't have more than 2 bags per person (50 lbs weight limit) + a handbag (40lbs). It's a $100 for every extra piece of luggage after that.

yes just make sure you verify with them that it is ok to change return dates without penalties! and I hope our school doesn't change the dates another time or I'll be spending my time off on the island!

So Happy I waited to order my plane tickets and triple checked the semester dates. I saw the calendar change posted on the Nov. 26th b/c I look at the school website almost everyday. So happy I waited!!!

I wish I would've waited too but my parents were so impatient and worried that I wouldn't be able to find tickets. oh well what can I do now.

Keep your records and request the school make up for the difference. If you are able to prove that you purchased your tickets prior to changes in the academic calendar we were told that the school would compensate any losses. Then again, that's just what was promised...

Well I sent a copy of my old ticket with the old return date to the housing department and my admissions coordinator way before the calender changed. So I think that's about the only proof I have. And I have the new ticket now that I am putting in my Visa packet. I'll look into that, thank you for letting me know!
