Introns

The coding regions of many eukaryotic genes are interrupted by non-coding sequences known as introns. Introns are stretches of DNA whose transcripts are absent from mature mRNA product. Exons are stretches of DNA whose transcripts are present in mature mRNA and encode the product of the eukaryotic gene. The relationship between the interrupted exons at the DNA sequence level and the spliced exons in the mRNA is shown in the diagram.
