R all Ross clinicals ACGME approved?

Ok, I heard a rumor that 1) Ross lets the students choose their clinical centers(which is good) but that many times students are ignored and many make the mistake of choosing a site that might not be ACGME approved and end up in troubl. 2) Many Ross clinical centers are not ACGME approved. I know SGU students brag about their sites all being approved. To what degree are these rumors about Ross true? I tried to reach an answer from a Ross official, but without any success. Maybe some students can help?

The standard answer to this question has always been "no clinical rotations are ACGME approved anywhere." However most people really mean to ask if "do all the hospital where school X has clinical rotations host an ACGME approved residency program?" Why does this matter? Because a few states require that students perform the majority of their core rotations at hospitals which host ACGME approved residency programs. Some states don't care at all. I don't think any state cares where your electives are completed. SO, with that said, are all the Ross clinical rotations at ACGME hospitals? As far as I've been able to tell (admittedly, I've never asked this question to an admin) they all are except one place in New York (and that one is approved through the AOA). You may choose and arrange your own clinical rotations if you want. If so, you are correct in stating that it is your responsibility to make sure the hospital which you contact fulfills the requirements of your ultimate licensing board. Even if Ross sets up your clinicals, you should still be knowledgeable about the requirement of the state in which you would like to practice - just in case.

wildream, when I spoke to Brigette and Phil Perri recently, they assured me that all the clinical sites they set up for us are ACGME. Now, certain Ross students are sometimes so paranoid that the sites Ross set up for them are not good enough that they go out and set up their own sites. Sometimes, these overachievers outsmart themselves and get non-acgme sites. And these are the people who will cry the most and blame the University. I have yet to hear one Ross student ever making any mistake on their own.

FYI-Brigette and Phil are the people who set up rotations for Ross students in NJ. They are not the best or most accomodating but they seem like they know what they're doing.

I was trying to search through many of the clinical centers to see if I can see any page on their clinicals, when they start? their schedule? all that stuff? Is such info. available?

You can check on the hospital websites although some have incorrect information about their ACGME status. From what one of our alum, Jim, have posted; it is best if you pick up the phone and call each individual hospital to get the more accurate information. Maybe Jim can tell you more when/if he reads these posts.

Be CAREFUL!! Do NOT contact the Ross affiliated hospitals directly. That is how we lose spots - with hundreds of people harassing these poor hospital employees with such questions. This is a policy in the handbook and may result in some major butt kicking....or some politically correct way of saying that same thing in the handbook.

Clearly, you may contact hospitals which are not already affiliated with Ross University. (Just in case, say you are from St. George's....just kidding)

Ross has a few hospuitals that are AOA-approved, not ACGME. This will not cause you any proble in any state except Pennsylvania. If you are from Penn. and want to practice there, contact Phil Perri. He will work with you!! Ross is not out to screw people over.

yes, they always say dont call sites directly, but it is alright to call and not say what school you are from. the "greenbook" of ACGME is difficult to use. if you have a boatload of time, you can find every hospital in the book. but many are not listed by the name you knwo them as, and as such, you wont find them listed, even though they are ACGME. yes, i have heard there was an AOA site in NY. no, i had nobody in my class who had a problem with licensure with ross rotations.

Yes, if you call them please DO NOT tell them you are a Ross student. If they ask, tell them you are one of the USMG brats.

so what happens when it's time for licensure, and you've done a rotation that was not ACGME approved? do you have to repeat it? which states are more stringent?

From my research, Penn. is the only state that will not accept AOA credits. California will accept 18 hours of AOA if the remaining 54 are ACGME. In Texas, ACGME=AOA. Same with every other state I've looked into.

Why do people start these rummors? You can take a clinical anywhere a Residency is offered. So to offer a residency, the program is run according to ACGME certification standards, thus on the premises is an MD or an OD assigned to the program. Remember, both MD and OD are both part of the ACGME program. Furthermore, there are lots of ties between hospitals, colleges and so forth. Larking is certified thru Univ Miami.
