Interesting...I always thought he was real nice. But, I thought Dr. Y was doing a great job...is she leaving or something?

Her title has always been interim dean, and was just filling the position until they found a permanent one.

Dr. Y means well. but certainly is no Dean of Medical Sciences.
The school has problems vetting visiting faculty, standardizing curriculum from semester to semester and from visiting prof to visiting prof.
Taking problems to the dean does not generally result in solutions, in my experience- just advice, that usually includes dropping classes/taking longer to finish.

Again, that may not be everyone's experience at AUC, but it has been mine. There is a lot that is right with this school, but there is always room to make it better. And it stats from the top.

Are we talking about Dr. F, the histology professor?

Yeah, I believe so.

In that case, I would support his deanship (is that a word?)

I think his philosophy in teaching, if applied to administration, puts the student's best interest first:

I give my example from being in his class. If a majority of the students got an exam question wrong, most professors would say tough luck, but it's in the notes so it's fair game. With Dr. F, his response would be well, if that many people got it wrong, then I did not convey the information well enough for them to get the right answer.

I would welcome this kind of thinking in the school administration.

I concur; he would definitely do a great job.

Dr. F is very educated in different school education systems from my conversation with him I truly believe that he will be a positive influence on the school moving forward.

There is another candidate coming at the end of November but those details are scarce

If I had a choice of the staff it would definitely be Dr. F.

Is there a way that we, as students, can show our support to the administration for his selection?

I just received a mass email from the administration about this - Dr. F is giving a seminar on Thursday, October 29.

I think that a good portion of the student body would like to attend, I wish they would have picked a location better than LH3

I'm headed off the island that afternoon, but I plan on being there.

What time is his seminar and what's the topic?

Our great SGA president (no biased opinion there, of course) will be working to change the location of the seminar to LH1 or 2 so that we can accommodate more people.

If you want your voice heard, go to the seminar and fill the evaluation form afterwards.

His talk is entitled - Challenges and Opportunities in Medical Education @ 11:30am. Listen for an announcement during your classes tomorrow to see if the location has been moved from LH3.

I really, really, really hope this goes through. I went to his lecture today. A lot of it was classic Dr. F- slow, focused, and comprehensive- all on a level that is uniquely his own. But was also something completely new about the way just took charge, seemed willing to make concessions, but without derailing any of his goals- which he made really clear.

In case you did not attend:
1) LCME is pushing integrated curriculum
2) What LCME says goes, Stanford SOM almost found that out the hard way last year
3) ACGME (which accredits carib schools) will have to mirror those recommendations soon
4) Integrated curriculum is good for students.
5) AUC has 94% board passing rate, so it is doing a lot right, but there is always room to do better.
6) We do not have to do it overnight, but we need to make continuous progress to improve education.
7) Complacency is normal, and he is willing to push through it to achieve his goals.
8) AUC is a good school, but he wants it to be the best school, if not the best in America, at least the best in the Caribbean.
9) Students come first.

Looking around the room I saw a lot of pretty happy students, but a lot of faculty looked pretty down. Some looked pretty excited too- the good doctor from Nigeria was nodding his head and taking notes the entire time. Judging by the questions asked at the end you could tell there were a lot of people not happy about the prospect of meetings, curriculum changes, lecture changes, and potentially even learning new information to make this possible.

New curriculum or not, this guy at the helm means playing in a different league. I really dont think any other carib school can come close to anyone of F's caliber.

I really really really hope AUC doesnt mess this up.

nice summary. the only thing i'd add is he mentioned interest in a relationship with miller som. how that would work he didn't elaborate but said that he thought it made a lot of sense given the geographical proximity between us.

anyhow, i hope he gets the position.
