It's getting close to acceptances for Jan 2010, considering how it takes about 2-3months to get all the documents ready.

The rumor mill says that the incoming Jan 2010 has 200 something acceptances. So we'll see how many of those decide to come to UMHS.

Man, I'd hate to be the anatomy TA for 200 students >.>

Where the hell are they going to put everybody?

Yep! I will definately not apply to TA anything for the 200 students. Calvin apply for TA for anatomy.

DOn't worry about class size 200 student is small compared to ROSS MED's over 400 students and St. George's over 500 students per class. Be glad it is a small class. I love it because our class only has just over 20 student.

I think the problem is we only really have one building that can accommodate 200+ students. All the other rooms can maybe fit 50-100, and I'm being generous about the 100 lol

So like LB has stated, we better start looking for some magic beans

There is a rumor of construction this month. Remember that they used just over a month to build the teachers building and furnished it . And they built the new study rooms in a month too. And now they are gonna build something else I hope it is a gym but i doubt it

I heard that the next couple of buildings that carry priority are a bigger cafeteria and another 200+ capacity auditorium. Then I think a student union building is in the plans, followed by the gym. Dorms are at least until all the buildings I mentioned previously (if not more) are completed. So in 5-10 years, man this place will be awesome. In 5-10 years.

If all you want to do is have the tools to lift, the chiropractor's gym is pretty good. It's also pretty much 1/3 of the cost at the Marriott (a little less than $50US/month)

But if you want a gym that's "just like in the states" then I guess the marriott it is lol

The chiropractor's gym is located about 2 miles (seven minutes driving time) from campus or about 12 minutes from the Frigate Bay area. It is in the city of Basseterre on Cayon Street.

What UMHS official said. It's like 10 feet away from the asian supermarket, once you find out where it is lol. From school, it's about a 15-20min walk, though if you want to take a bus or drive there, it'll be faster.

It's been 3 weeks now and no response :( has anyone ever waited that long??? i called the FL office where I had my interview and they said the committee was behind because of a new computer system and that i'd hear back in 2-3 days, and that was monday of last week :/.....

UMHS

The length of time between the interview and the notification doesn't mean anything in regard to acceptance. Some applications are processed slowly and some more quickly. But the speed doesn't indicate whether an acceptance or rejection is in the works.

What the speed usually indicates is time of semester and what the faculty on campus are doing. Over the past week or two, we have been writing exams. Today, they are being administered and the faculty will be analyzing the results over the next few days. Since these are activities that cannot be postponed, they have a high priority. Once things slow back down, the Committee will be able to process the applications more quickly.

Your admissions rep is also correct that we are in the midst of training for a new computer system. This is one more thing that is taking up faculty time. Again, that will be completed during the week.

Be patient. The Committee will get your application processed as soon as they can.

how many ppl got accepted for jan 2010 semester?

i was accepted for the Jan. 2010 class. i was going to defer until September 2010. however, two reasons have changed my mind: 1) citibank said that my loan would expire within 90 days if i didn't use the money (and they told me that i couldn't defer the loan to sept. 2010, which was verified by UMHS) and 2) ...i'm sitting in a boring, four and a half-hour class epidemiology class which is just a bunch of statistics...:banghead:

one thing has me concerned. it is obvious that citibank is being a bit difficult when comes to approving loans...is it going to be as difficult to secure the 2nd, 3rd and 4th year loans as well? it doesn't make sense to get approved for a year, maybe two, and then not be able to finish due to denial. ???

Yes, it will. It will be increasingly more difficult each loan term.

UMHS

KyMDhopeful may very well be right. I doubt that anyone can predict this any better than they predicted the downfall of the banking industry. If the economy stays the same or gets worse, then I will be siding with KyMDhopeful. If the economy gets better, then student loan availablity should improve as well.

UMHS is not sitting idly by to see which way the economy is going to go. The University is taking active steps to improve the financial aid situation for its students. Unfortunatley, these steps will take time and won't, if successful, come into play in time to help the students accepted to the January 2010 semester.

I wasn't aware that you are a Citibank loan officer, or that you have a crystal ball handy. ;)

It's like UMHS said. The ability to obtain loans in the future is going to be primarily dependent on the state of the economy. Thank God we've got such a financially responsible, free market mastermind in the White House...

UMHS, have there been difficulties for current students to get a second or third loan for school? if so, what does one do in a situation like that? i only ask because, as i have great faith in UMHS, i don't have the same level of confidence in the economy becoming any better in the near future...i don't want to lay the foundation of a home and then not have the means to put a roof on it. and i don't wanna go to a stuffy, ivy-league med school in the states! i've seen what they do to people

UMHS
11-06-2009, 08:30 AM
Sarcomere,

I have to be careful how I answer this question. I want to provide you with the answer you need but do it in a way that can't be picked to pieces.

When UMHS started in May 2008, the economy had not tanked yet and Citi was the lender for student loans. UMHS students who had relatively decent credit were having no problems with loans. About the time those students were ready to reapply for the next year's loans, the economy was into a serious decline. Citi decided to drop the student loan programs for close to 3500 colleges and universities, of which UMHS was one. Obviously, some of our students had a difficult time getting the continuation loans. Through the concerted efforts of Dr. R, Citi added UMHS back into the fold. Since that time, I have not hear of many coninuing studdents having trouble with loans. There have been a few but, in many cases, it was specific to their financial situation. For example they hit the cap on the amount of loans for which they were eligible.

It appears that getting the loan is difficult in this economic climate but that once you get a loan it is easier to get the second one.

So I have a question regarding transportation and safety. When is the last bus trip (school provided transportation) to the Marriott and/or Royal?

Lets say I stay at school late to study, what's the latest time I can stay and have a safe form of transportation back home if I decide to live in the Royal or Marriott? Because I am definitely not walking 5 miles at night alone or getting into a taxi alone.

and how long is the library open?, i'd like to stay at school and study if possible.

I was told to send it off to St. Kitts. It takes some time to get down there so you may want to pay a little more to insure it gets down there in a timely manner. You can send it off before you get a response from city bank. Just make sure you still mark on the visa form that your going to be using a loan.

since she brought up the text book thing...gray's anatomy is a pretty bland text. :bored: my freshman A/P book has better descriptions in it.

if wsucougar is reading this, do you feel that gray's anatomy (assuming that is the text you used) fully prepares one to pass the step 1 boards? i know that there is more to step 1 than anatomy, but for that portion of it i was just curious if there was a better one to study from...

A quick not to ntopieces, send that box by courier...UPS, DHL, FedEx or Amerijet...and it will get here on time. If you send a box by the US Postal Service and do not use airmail, it will take forever.

If you send items by boat, it will usually take two weeks but you need to track the shipment carefully so that it doesn't end up sitting in a warehouse on the dock in Miami.

I can add one more piece of information to the question regarding the time it takes for parcels to arrive. My wife sent a box by priority mail and it took two weeks to arrive. While the box has no weight restrictions it was 13 X 3 X 15 and the cost to send it was $35.00. While it arrived quickly, it is an expensive way to send things.

Is anyone looking a place to stay next semester? Send me a PM. Don't worry about your first semester. There will be some big changes, but as long as you stay on top of things you will do well :)

ummm...ya, could you elaborate on the "big changes"...?

Moving to a new island in itself is a huge change for most people. On top of that medical school will challenge you mentally and physically and push you too the limit. You can make it, but you have to work at it.

So, who is making the first Jan 2010 UMHS Facebook group?? Any takers?

So how come UMHS doesn't have a network on facebook? All the other Caribbean school do.

I think you need to petition for it. When you do they ask for the schools e-mail address.

Cath, I'm not sure where you are getting your numbers from, but we have no indication that the numbers will even be that high. I think the incoming students will be very pleased again with the faculty to student ratio. You're going to get lots of face to face time with your profsessors. Of course, that means they will know every one of you by sight. We'll know if you're not in class!;)

are you serious? if that is the case, i don't mind at all. i like smaller classes anyway and it's a better learning environment too.

i'd been hearing bout 70 at school too. guess this just proves that u can't always listen to the rumors ringing around the school.

So from what I understand we can graduate in less than 4 years, is that correct?
Four semesters of Basic Sciences (Jan 2010-April 2011). And then 2 years of clinical rotations.

so the class of Jan 2010 can actually graduate in 2013?

There are lapses from Basic to Clinicals

Seit El Doctora

yes I am aware that semester V when we take those 2 courses and also I believe someone said there's a gap between getting your step I scores and setting up your rotations.

You are all right. Basic sciences goes by in a blink of an eye. Next stop clinical rotations.

Is that 70 students for Med 1 or is that for Med 1 and the ARP combined? Also, around how many students did UMHS have in their Med 1 program and ARP program, during the fall semester? I want to know if there are still seats available, in case I decide to apply.

If you're applying for Jan term I'm afraid its too late. Try for May 2010 or Fall 2010.

Thank you for the information. However just for my general knowledge, I was wondering, is that 70 students for Med 1 or is that for Med 1 and the ARP combined? Also, around how many students did UMHS have in their Med 1 program and ARP program, during the fall semester?

I don't have the accurate numbers with me but I will be able to give you something close...+/-5. In fall 2009, we had about 6 in ARP and 90 in Med 1. For the January 2010 semester we will have around 70 in ARP and Med 1 combined. I would estimate that the ARP will still be in the 5-6 range. The class will be a decent size but not so large that you will not have good access to the faculty.

gx255 is correct. It is too late to apply for January but May 2010 is open!
