I was wondering about something. Say someone does a residency in FP or IM, completed it, and decided to apply for another residency. Like ER, ortho, optho, derm, etc...

is this common? is this viewed unfavorably? just wondering

thanks

Someone in my program finished her FP residency then went on to do a derm residency. There have been some that have left my program part way to do a ob/gyn residency. (but it's not exactly all that common)

Wait till your a resident and see if you really want to go back once you finish. If your a FP and really like Derm, you can do all the derm you want. Its all up to your comfort level in diagnosing and treating the conditions.

Residents who go back for more training are called Fellows and do fellowships and there are many of those for subspecializing in your field.

FP has ER, Sports Med and Geriatrics. I saw an add for an IM doc who specializes in all kinds of derm procedures and didn't mention one thing of primary care for IM.

i thought they were eliminating the ER back door for FP folks (unless its a rural area)
