I contaced Austin Travel today and they gave me a deal for Sep.( open return ticket) for $920. Is it reasonable? Should I go ahead and take it or you guys think I can get better deals somewhere else. For some reason I keep reading that some people got deals for as low as 600 and I am going through all the possible airlines and I can't find anything less than 900.

where are you flying from first of all?

920 from cali doesn't sound too bad? but Im not from there.

920 from NYC would be a rip off.

did you call american airlines directly? you might be able to cut out the middleman markup, if any.

You can usually find cheap round trip tickets on the Internet BUT they will not do OPEN-ENDED tickets. The only way I have heard to do open-ended tickets is to buy through a travel agent such as Austin Travel. I never did an open ended ticket and never used a travel agency, and saved myself some money that way. However, clearly my flights were not flexible.

Edited to correct information.

I am flying from Nashville, TN. And Mitch, AA Does Open-ended tickets on the phone. I called them a few days ago and they gave me a deal for something around 950. I had to call the next day and book. I think prices might be higher for Sep since it is the vacation time, but would be much cheaper around Dec. Maybe not.

Dont use the Austin Travel!!! I said it a few times before....Use American Airlines directly and avoid any extra people between you and your ticket. My flight was actually changed without my notification during first semester...due to the travel agency. If you really want a set date, check out the web site for the academic calendar.

Just remember that life down here is not a sprint, it's a 4 semester-long marathon.

after you get a price quote from austin, ALWAYS call the airline directly first BEFORE you book it. austin travel's price should only be around $50 or so more than the airline's.

last year, when i was first coming down here, austin travel gave me a certain price quote for a roundtrip ticket. i called aa directly to ask for the exact same itinerary and they quoted me a price that was $50 less. i figured that was no big deal. the $50 was austin's service charge.

about a week later, i changed my mind about the departure date so i called austin and aa again. aa's price went down by almost $200. austin quoted me a price that was $300 more than aa's for the same itinerary! they said the big price hike was because aa hiked up their price for the actual ticket. when i told them that i had just spoken with aa and they actually told me that the price went DOWN by almost $200, austin got defensive and nasty and basically accused me of lying.
