View Full Version : attention potential students and current students

If you are trying to decide on wether or not to attend AUA.... go to another caribbean school. First off, you should try your best to go to one of the big 4 schools... if not, AUA should be your last choice.
Currently, the school has lost most of its Baltimore rotations... most students are waiting 3-4 months to be placed into rotations (3rd year) after passing the step... if you call the school, they will more than likely lie and tell you everything is gold etc... AUA has by far been the shadiest experience Ive ever had to deal with. The clinical coordinators are unbelievable... they will lie to your face to try and get you to accept some no good rotation which will cause problems with licensure in the future... but the school doesn't care.. as long as you get your MD and can practice in 25 out of the 50 states. I mean, the clinical situation is insane! Students backed up waiting for months, students moving to cities only to be told the day before that the rotation is canceled... I can go on and on. I'm sincerely scared... not that I wont get my MD... Im scared that its going to take 3-3 1/2 years to finish clinics which should normally take 18 months at a normal school. The situation can only get worst... when i was on the island, every class after me was about 300+. you do the math. I know your thinking to yourself: who is this person and why should I trust their word, "troll", the situation will be fixed by the time I get to clinicals, etc etc... whatever, I dont really care if you believe me or not.... Im not going to lose sleep. I think that students should really know what they are getting into.
Now I know Im going to get some people on here calling bluff and Im going to get those who want some sort of "proof"... the truth is that Im too lazy to get you proof... Im not going to break my back trying to convince everyone. Believe what you want. Also, most students who are in my situation are probably to scared to get on here and make waves so your not going to get lots of responses from students in 3rd and 4th year confirming this... Id be surprised if it happens.
Look, bottom line, the school is shady, expensive, and money hungry. They dont really care about wether or not you want to practice in Virginia or whatever, as long as you get your MD, can get into some family medicine residency in Alaska, they are happy. If your really out of options then fine, come to AUA... if you have other choices, Id go with them hands down. Or , dont believe me, come to AUA and let me know in two years when your trying to start 3rd year.
And I just want to say something... I hate my coordinator as much as the next student but I realize that it not the coordinators fault... point blank, the school doesnt have enough clinical spots for its students and more than likely, tells the coordinators to beat around the bush with the students. You literally take the step, pass it, get all ur paperwork in and wait for weeks to even get an email from your coordinator, and when you do get that email, its like some one-liner saying something like Ill let you if any spots open up soon... thats it! You email back asking for more info like how long should I expect to wait etc.. and no response for weeks... are you kidding me... this is what I dropped 60 grand on?? its just crazy!

I have proof against your post as well, but i'm too lazy to post it. And a lot of people on here would agree with me but they are busy studying for their exams.

Unfortunately, Rahulb's situation is the exception and not the norm. There are students who are told to wait months before starting rotation. And some students who have already started aren't being told when/where their next rotation will be (me). Its not the clinical coordinators' fault, there is definitely a lack of clinical spots, and it didn't help with the situation in Baltimore which affected many students.

You have proof? Why dont you finish studying for your chemistry/calculus test before you talk about the clinical situation. Why dont you get through antigua first before commenting on people who have busted there butts off, passed step 1, and are now waiting in the dark about there future. You have no experience with clinicals and you have no idea what you are talking about, so the best thing for you to do is be QUIET.
This guy is dead right about everything he said. The clinical situation is HORRIBLE. I am starting my 2nd rotation right now and let me tell you the process has been a PAIN. I have friends waiting for months to get placed. I have friends who have been placed and told to go back home because the rotation has been canceled. I have friends who have moved from city to city just to get there rotations done.
It isnt the coordinators fault. There simply arent enough spots for everyone to be placed.

I agree with the fact that its not the clinical coordinators fault. Its whoever is accepting the transfer students and giving them priority over the students who have been here the whole time's fault. My clinical coordinator(DD) has been very nice and professional and I met her in person. I feel bad that our school put her in such a position to deal with hundreds of students and with a lack of spots.

I really don't care whether you find my joke funny or not.
You are probably at least 10 years older than me and far more educated.. and we can all TOTALLY see that in what you are saying.
By the way, you need to understand the difference in figurative and literal, you learn that in Romeo and Juliet, you might need to retake that.
Honestly, chill out. I already apologized, there was no need for your post.

To be fair Dhavalp your joke really was very bad. It was a hit on a sore spot for many students. I hope that by the time your class gets here the situation is better because right now it is pretty bad.

also the attrition rate is 30-60% so there's a strong possibility he will never make it off the island.

my med1 class in september 07 was 350 students and at least 100 failed something. by med4 we only had ~200 left
i imagine premed is a bit harder because of the longer tenure coupled with the fact that a lot of these kids are 17-18 yrs old.
either way its a tough program as we have to do the same coursework as american students in a shorter amount of time with limited resources and more obstacles to overcome. its definitely not for everyone and its reflected in the pass rates.

wow u got super lucky...i had to wait 3 months...so did everyone else i know. I am thankful to aua for accepting me and letting me persue my MD but i have to agree with everything max and chapo said, the clinical situation is BAD. You have to wait 3-4 months to start your first rotation and you wont be told where and when you will start your next one. I really dont know how the CCs place students...all you guys are saying its not their fault but i feel like they are not giving the few spots we have on a first come first served basis but are instead giving it to whomever they please. (perhaps students with higher step scores are given priority) Also, if your last name starts from A - K you get placed before M-Z...totally unfair...it shud be based on whose been waiting the longest but its NOT. Worse than this clinical mess, is the financial aid situation. There is only one loan company available right now and you need at least a 655 FICO score to borrow from them. Keep AUA as a last resort, the clinicals and financial aid suck, but it is still a better choice than the non BIG 4 schools. so if you dont get into one of them then go to AUA. Despite all these complaints, in retrospect, if i had known about their premed program back when i was 18 and fresh out of high school, i would have done it...undergrad was a waste of time...if you know you want to go into medicine might as well do their 2 year premed program and start medschool....you'll be a really young doctor...thats hot!!!;)

All valid points, except for undergrand being a waste of time. It was awsome, by far the best time of my life and wouldnt give it up for anything. :D:D

Rahulb, you know damn well that your the exception. Didnt you blow up a 99% on the step? I have mad respect for that and take my hat off. But there is no need to cheerlead for the school. you dont have to be scared brotha. I dont think the dean is on here making a list of who is nauty and nice. Man up and speak the truth. You have it luck but other students, including your friends, are struggling.
Dhavalp... man, you really went overboard and put on your AUA cheerleading skirt and panties with your first comment. C'mon guy!! Like cosine said, its a low blow for us in clinics. I know you apologized and thats cool but if you want some cheerleading pom poms for your skirt, Im sure they sell them at the AUA premed bookstore.
I agree with the OP. Its not the coordinators fault. Its the lack of spots. And its not fair that all the ROSS students who couldnt pull their weight at ROSS come to AUA and fill up ours spots. I think that students who started at AUA from the start DESERVE priority over transfer students when it comes to placement into rotations. We deserve it after putting so much money into the school vs. dudes who transfer into 5th semester. Ill be damn if I miss the match because a couple 50 students from ROSS transfered into AUA during 5th semester and filled up everything. What do docs make their first year of practice? $150 grand? So lets say instead of finishing residency and starting practice in 2015, you start 2016 and lose out on $150 grand for the previous year. But hey, whats $150 grand eh???
AUA is a good school. Im grateful for the opportunity its given me. But at the same time, if you have big enough testis to charge so $12,100/semester for rotations, then there should be a PLETHORA of ACGME rotations. If not then tell me why I shouldn't have gone to Spartan caribbean school where they charge $5 grand/semester (I even want to say its as low as $3,500/semester) and done the same non-acgme approved rotations back to back? Im sorry, but all of us in 3rd year our pissed! I dont need more stress on top of the loan situation and studying for step 2.
