OK, gadget (if that is indeed your name :)
Why does Ross insist on screwing with students computers to use the network? I already have my computer configured the way I want, I run protective software such as NAV Corporate 8.6 and zone alarm pro (both of which I have purchased), and have it set up the way I want. I also have considerable experience in IT (CCNA, CNE, MCSE).
I've read reports on this board that when a student takes their personally owned computers to your IT department they (the IT department) reduces the students privileges on their own computers to something less than administrator, erases and changes configurations, and generally screws things up.
Frankly, thats enough of a reason for me not to go to Ross.

Quite frankly, if you do have the experience you say you have, you should be well aware of the risks involved with allowing unrestricted access to network resources. That said, we DO NOT purposefully ERASE FILES, CHANGE PERMISSIONS, ETC ETC on ANY students systems. Nor do we generally "screw them up". By necessity, configurations of laptops, consist of verifying all critical security updates have been installed, installing and updating virus software, registering MAC addresses, adding computer accounts to our domain, and creating a user profile for use while connected to our network. Do not believe everything you read! In the future, please keep you posts to specific topics. I will not respond to unsubstantiated heresay in the future. Thank you.

Thanks for your response, and I don't think it will be an issue.

Why do they remove programs when they setup the wireless connection. I know that they do because two programs were removed from my computer. 1 being norton internet utilities. This I can somewhat see since you have to get the virus software off but cant you leave the firewall and other utilities? 2 they removed norton utilities that was a separate program, I used this often to insure the removal of errors in links as well as running periodic checks of my hard drive. Why would they need to remove this. Both programs were registered. Besides this everything seems to be working fine but I think if the IT is going to remove software, other than antivirus, they should consult with the computer owner first. It is not like I actually brought the install disks with me to the island.

hey! Didn't you read where he said "I will not respond to unsubstantiated heresay in the future."? :)
This "gadget" character is a perfect example of why IT people shouldn't be in customer service positions.

Unfortunately, Norton Utilities is a suite of applications that includes the consumer version of the antivirus product. Because of issues with the integration of this product and our need to guarantee timely virus software and definition updates, we have had to uninstall the NU application in order to allow the Norton Antivirus corporate product to be installed. We are working with Norton on resolving this problem. Please come see me with proof of license so that we can resolve this issue and have your application restored. Thank you and I apologize for any confusion or inconvenience this has caused....

It would be near impossible for me to bring in proof of license since it is in the states. My aunt or uncle would look for it in my stuff but having them find a couple of pieces of paper in all of my stored items would be near impossible. Until I get back to the states can you recommend a shareware program that will allow me to verify the integrity of the windows configuration files and links? I can use the disk defrag that came with the computer.

you better use your own home connection for irc.
irc is full of warez, and i'm guessing that is the reason they blocked access.
Irc is not "educational" either.
if you want to tweak with irc, my guess is that you're gonna have to find a server that allows connections without ident. Ross probably has the ident port 113 blocked by the firewall.

Not exactly sure what types of utilities you are looking for but you can try any of a number of applications, like WinRescue XP or if you are looking for configuration control, perhaps TweakUI.... additionally, have you tried searching your registry for NU licensing information? May times, the uninstall programs will fail to remove all reg keys....come see me after the mini, so we can resolve this....

Is there any hope of getting some more wireless networks up in the near future? Also, is there anychance of activating the LAN lines in classroom 6, or the PBLs?
Thanks in advance

I'm arriving on the rock on august 23. How soon can I get my laptop set up to access the school network?
I sort of need immediate internet access for my side business. Dial up probably won't be set up for days/weeks.

Yes, we will begin adding more WiFi zones shortly. We plan on wirelessly enabling the student services building (Bank, SGA, Seaside) in the next few weeks. You can see that we have already begun renovating and cleaning up the patio and Seaside areas. We plan on adding tables to the outside patios and cafe space. We will be installing several wireless access points in this area as well to gain as broad an area of coverage as possible.
Wired and wireless access in the classrooms DURING CLASSES will not be available until plans are complete that specify the type of structured access(Course Management software/website, digital textbooks, streaming media, etc). However, we may schedule LAN access to be available during non-classroom hours in areas open for student studying.
Enabling the ports in PBL rooms for student access is possible(as long as your notebook has been configured for wired access)...I will discuss with Mary Taylor during our weekly operations meetings....

unfortunately, we cannot enable your account or configure your notebook until you have registered. However, we do configure a group of PC's in our library PC labs for guest access during semester breaks to support new incoming students....
