What do you mean???
you started two threads with the same purpose, henceforth I merged them together and placed them in the appropriate section (FAQ) for SGU. It will stay here until the August 2010 class is up and running and people stop posting on it, whereupon it will be moved back to the general forum. Look at this FAQ section, you will see this is where all the main threads are for the different entering classes.

ok so i received an invitation for an interview to SGU, but along with this interview the committee recommended that i re take the mcat. I have a 23M. I have a masters degree in medical sciences from a US medical school in florida and a bachelors from a state school in florida. ** gpa was 3.21 MS gpa was 3.31. Is there a chance i still get accepted if i interview well. Dont understand why they would offer the interview if they do not think my mcat is good enough. Ive already been accepted to Ross and interviewed at a DO school in florida that i think i could get into, and i DO NOT want to study for 3 months again to take this test which ive already taken twice with a chance i might do worse. thoughts/ advice would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure if this is the right place to post this but thought i'd try.... for those fellow students starting at SGU in August 2010, looking for housing, i propose getting a group of 2-3 different people to rent a house in a great part of the island.
for the same price (approx. USD $800-1000) as a 400 sq/ft dorm room at SGU that you would share with another person, you could live in a 2 or 3 bedroom, 2,000+ sq/ft modern house with your own room and all the amenities you had back home (leather couches, full living and dining rooms to study, full kitchen, plasma, pool, a/c, etc)...
pm me if you are interested ... i have some good contacts and would be able to organize this to get it off the ground...

My MCAT is 23O, but my BSc GPA is 3.41 and grad GPA is 3.65. They didn't ask me to retake the MCAT, but I also applied and was accepted for the Jan class so its usually a little less competitive than the Aug class. My GPA is also above average which makes up for the lower than average MCAT. This is probably why they are asking you to take it again. Your "stats" are below average.
If you think you have a chance at the DO school or don't care if you go to Ross instead of SGU, then skip the MCAT. I didn't take the MCAT again b/c I knew that if I did the same or worse (or even maybe 1 pt better) the lack of improvement would/could show that I don't have the ability to improve anymore. This can be severe hinderance on an app.
This is a tricky situation. It really depends on if you think SGU is worth the 3 months of studying.

Great idea, and your probably not the first to think of it... but as a medical student you are required to live on campus for the first term. You can request a "waiver" if you have an animal or moving to the island with a family, but the website says "all entering medical, veterinary, and graduate students are required to live on campus for one term."

students with husbands/wives/gfs/bfs/kids are allowed to live off campus even in 1st term from what i understand

SGU admissions are on a rolling basis. You can apply for the Sept 2010 class now. If you want to wait (and save the $75 adm fee) to see if you do get accepted to the DO schools or even US MD schools I would say the latest you should apply for the Sept class is mid May. It tends to be more competitive and more people apply b/c it fits in with a 'normal' academic year.
I'm thinking that since you applied to 20 US MD schools and 12 DO schools you think you have good enough stats to get into these schools. Do you mind posting them?? Maybe you just need to improve your MCAT or some other aspect of your app to get into a US school.

aprevo8,
I think your GPAs are too low for a US MD school, but you look competitive for a DO school. To be honest, if you've already spent all of that money on 32 applications, I don't see how another $75 can hurt to apply to SGU... especially if you want to start school and not wait another year to reapply.
You can't change your GPAs which seem to be the weakness in your app. So if you do take the extra year, you could re-take the MCAT, but a 30 is an above average score for DO schools. Maybe try doing a post-bacc program or a Master's. Try contacting the adcom to see how you can strengthen your app. Most will offer some advice as to what they are looking for.

Thanks for the advise. I've already taken one year off so I plan to start school within the 2010 calender year. I think I have a legitimate shot at DO schools and I don't what it is, DO or MD, doesn't make a difference to me. I just want to become a physician and that's the bottom line. We'll see what happens next month as I have an interview at NSU-COM December 1st. I would love to go there but we'll see how that unfolds. I just would like to know where I stand as a potential applicant to SGU for the fall 2010 term.

Good luck on the interview!! If it helps in you any... I chose to go SGU over DO schools. The doctor I interviewed with even stated that SGU's facilities are better than some US MD schools. You can take that for what its worth.

To clarify, the MCAT is 21 after the first two tries? I'm unsure how SGU looks at multiple MCATs (some take individual scores, some combine the highest score for each section no matter which test it was.) And you (hypothetically) want to appeal to adcom to get an interview without having to take the MCAT a third time? No one wants to take the MCAT. Someone describe it to me as 'feeling like you've just been hit by a bus.'
I've never heard of anyone appealing for an interview (maybe do a search.) My guess is that it may happen, especially b/c they have rolling admissions. I don't know how successful you will be. If they do grant you the interview they may offer you a place in the FTM program. When you way FTM vs. taking the MCAT again... I think most ppl would choose re-taking the MCAT.
We should make a group on facebook...

Hi Everyone,
Just joined valueMD even though I have been a lurker. I applied for the Jan 2010 admission but got a call from the assistant dean of admission that I am a very competitive candidate and he didn't want to lose me to Ross. He mentioned there is a competitive "100 applicant" waiting list and he can move me to #6 in the list even though there is no garuntee. I instead took the August acceptance because its more suitable for personal reasons. I am happy to join you guys in the board and hope to see some faces in August.
I just received the acceptance packet two day later from the call, and it mentions "schedule of payment to follow in coming weeks." Did anyone already received the payment packet and financial aid packet? How long did it take you to receive it after the acceptance letter and do they mention how much estimated financial aid you will receive in the letter?
Thanks:D
Hey GreatWhite,
We are in the exact same boat!
I recieved the payment package around 7 days after the call. I did not receive any etimates of financial aid however.

AI3X- thanks for the reply. Its good to know a time frame. Is it $1000 deposit altogether or more like $500 now and $500 later like Ross' deposit. I'm reading the dorm packet info and most mentions only avaliable to upperclassman. Are we considered upperclassman in relations to undergrads or upperclassmen is referring to 2nd year students?

No problem. Its easier for ppl to search it now...
The $1000 is a lump sum. After that, if you are taking loans, you can request that the school just deduct the $4000 from your loans instead of having to lay that money out too.
I am almost positive that MD students are upperclassmen and women. Undergrads are those in the bachelors program and maybe even FTM, but I am not 100% on that.

Upperclassmen would be the students of the Jan '10 class when you all enter. For us, its the Aug '09 folks. Undergrads are the ones who are in Premed or FTM (not 100% sure though). For first termers, double with kitchnette is usually the housing option. They mention that IF a single opens up, you may be given that. But in that case, you may be put in with an upperclassman. And that may or may not work for some.

No problem, happy to help. SGU works it so that you put 1000 down for your acceptance and then about a month or so later they want another payment toward tuition. It all goes toward the term payment, like invincibledoc said.
Does anyone know if it absolutely necessary to have a return ticket from Grenada before coming to the island? My friend who is down there told me that there are flights you can purchase when you are ready to leave the island. Other literature says a return ticket is a must before coming to the island. Does it depend on the customs officer you get lol?

No return ticket necessary. Some students stay the for the entire 2 years.... Like FooBear. He says you just have to have pay a fee to extend the stamp they give you (its not a visa)

They'll ask you for an approximate date of departure...just give them a date a few days after term ends- so in your case, May 17th or something. They never ask to specifically see the ticket.

AUC pro: cost, island, may, small class
SGU pro: name, rotations, larger network
Not that AUC doesnt have a good name, good roations or a large network but SGU is just ahead of the game in those areas...but I guess none of this is neither here nor there...if I get into both I'd say there is a 50/50 chance of me seeing you in August at SGU

I had never heard of AUC before VMD. Its just not as prevalent on the east coast. Ross was a big one for me... its how I found SGU. I have some friends at Ross, but when DeVry bought it, it seemed that the students said it had changed and I wanted a school with a great network and better history with student relations.

I had never heard of AUC before VMD. Its just not as prevalent on the east coast. Ross was a big one for me... its how I found SGU. I have some friends at Ross, but when DeVry bought it, it seemed that the students said it had changed and I wanted a school with a great network and better history with student relations.
yup yup...one of my UG mentors just graduated from AUC so that was a good connect. Plus a few other random connections have gone to SGU, Ross, and Saba..booyah...i've got the whole big 4 covered!

The docs I have worked with went to UPenn, Columbia, NYMC, UMDNJ, Tulane, UCSD, SUNY, and ... Guadalajara! Those last guys were the ones who actually had the sincerest advice bc they knew my position. The rest just didn't know what to think.
The best advice is to talk to someone who has done this IMG thing.

Totally agree...I think that is one of the most helpful things before choosing abroad. I sat down with a 3rd yr resident at Mayo who went abroad for the MD. He had some really good insight into the process of being an IMG and what there is to face. Gotta love some un name program out west that when he asked why he hadn't heard anything on his app he was told it was because they didn't think he spoke english...even though he is a USIMG...and went for the MD in an English speaking country lol...oh well..we all have our hurdles I guess

I posted on here a while ago considering this route since I keep getting waitlisted at DO schools with a 3.35cGPA and 30 MCAT. I just wanted to know what the dropout rates are at SGU? So far I have been waitlisted at 3 DO schools and still have 1 more interview left. SGU is becoming a better option at this point.

Why would the drop out rate concern you? Do you really believe you will become part of that stat? IMO, if you think that about SGU, you are also thinking about it at the respective DO schools.

Probabley not, seeing as I have worked this hard to get here but the only thing that concerns me is that I have heard a lot of stories about carribean medical students who are left out to dry and fend for themselves when they do not succeed. I searched up on the forum for positive things about SGU and people are saying they have a good support system to make sure that does not happen to their students. Is that correct? I'm not worried about being called our for being a carribean medical student by any means because I have spoke with many that are succesful graduates of these schools. I don't really want to spend another year of my life doing a post-bacc and going through this expensive process yet again.

I would say that of all the carib schools SGU has a reputation of having the most student support... while in basic sciences and in clinical rotations. I can only tell you what the rep is bc I havent yet had the experience (I leave for first term tmrw.) Other schools are known to accept more students than they have clinical spots for and things like that... General consensus is that SGU is the top carib school. It is well known in the US and has great connections at hospitals for clinicals. Dont know how much research you have done, but make sure you would be happy with choosing SGU and then apply. Your stats seem pretty solid for the Aug class.

This is what I hear from everyone. That is why I am really considering applying to SGU in case I don't get accepted from one of my waitlists. No matter where I go to school, I am going to work hard and do the best I can. I have done some research into the SGU program and recieved the huge information booklet. It seems pretty solid to me and I would be happy being away from home since I did not do that in undergrad. I'm basically annoyed at this point because my stats are above some of these DO schools yet I am being waitlisted. My interviews are going well too so I have no clue to why they are coming to this decision.

I have also heard that it is possible to transfer to a US MD school from SGU? Is there any truth in this? The only reason I would like to stay in US is that I hear more and more about the difficulty it is for FMG's to match in residencies besides family practice. I would like to do cardiology, now don't get me wrong this will most likely change but I know that the future is not good for family practice with the whole health care reform and it really doesn't interest me.

THe DO waitlist thing could be bc you're not a state resident (?). Or the schools you are applying to are seeing a massive increase in applicants bc of the economy or other factors.
It is true that you can transfer to a US MD school, though it is very difficult and time consuming, (and also $$.) That said, there are people who do it. There is a guy that blogged about transfering from SGU to Drexel a few years ago. I think he applied twice to transfer. Spots in US MD schools only open up if someone drops out, quits, or otherwise so those are the spots you need to fight for (with other med students.) There is def a list of schools that typically will take transfers... Drexel, NYMC, Tulane (I've read.)
You are allowed to have your preferences in medicine; no one says you have to do family med as a carib grad. If there is no increase in residency spots in the neat future, USIMGs will have a tougher time getting residency (bc new US MD and DO schools are opening and existing schools are increasing enrollment.) Hypothetically, if you start SGU in Aug, you will be in the 2014 match.... who can say what is going to happen 4 years out? No one. You can speculate, but you will never know until the time comes. We (USIMGs) will all be in the same boat when the time comes. We just have to work harder and be sharper than the other students in that at USIMGs.
apevo8
01-11-2010, 04:20 PM
Thanks for the advice. The only thing stopping me from applying is that whole debate about where the residency availibilities will go by the time 2014 match season rolls around. It goes something like this US MD<US DO<FMG, is that correct when it comes to preference. That is a tough spot to be put in when I have already committed this much effort in trying to get into a US medical school, be that DO or MD. I would rather not go through this lengthy expensive process again next year while doing a post-bacc but the thought of not being matched one i'm finished while being 250k+ in debt scares me badly.

Hi there everybody, I am happy to finally post on this forum as an accepted student to AUG 2010, man it feels like I've been 'touring' (lurking just sounds weird..lol) this forum for ages, praying and hoping that i get in, But now that Im in I am having a big problem with finding housing off campus (i will either be bringing my significant other with me or she will be joining me there... hope that allows me to get off campus). I know its a bit early but is there a way to book an apartment for aug 2010 right now? I've heard about Cool Runnings, and Continental Inn I have no clue about them, can any one tell me if they are really close to campus and which one they would recommend and for what reason? I know this is asking a lot and probably in the wrong place but any help or guidance would be really appreciated. Also contact info for the landlords and pricing would be greatly appreciated. Dont mind sharing an apartment as long as its with only one other person and I have my own bedroom.

The housing dept here doesnt only deal with on campus housing... they will help you with off campus as well. Besides what ppl post here, you can contact them as well. (I am hoping you didnt know about this and I dont seem like a complete fool.)

Hey SalamaSeed, I have tried getting in touch with the housing department, but they just gave me lists from 2007 and most of the contact info on the lists are outdated and no longer in service, I've been trying to call all these numbers and I only got through to one person that said their place is leased out for the entire year. But I do appreciate the suggestion but sitting here in Canada I feel like Im getting no where. Besides I think the best source of real-estate info is from people that have actually lived there. Let me know what you think and if you have any other suggestions I look forward to them. Also feel free to PM me just so my queries dont get in the way of more important issues.

There is no visa. When you get here, show them the letter to the Immigration Officer. Thats it. Seems odd, but they deal with hundreds of students so thats how they do it.

Hey SalamaSeed thanks for your prompt reply as usual, another thing that worries me is luggage, I will most likely be taking american airlines, but I think I will have at least 4 pieces of luggage to check in. More than the cost, Im worried if my stuff will get there safe, Im thinking ill be bringing my external monitor, as well as my laser printer, and some cloths in a suitcase. Do you have any idea if things of that sort are okay being checked in. Or should I expect to have them mishandled, or stolen??... I only ask cause when I travel to Africa I know thats a very likely possibility, but never been to Grenada so dont know what to expect.

Just a few questions:
WHAT ARE YOU BRINGING THAT YOU NEED 4 BAGS??? Does external monitor = desktop computer? And why are you bringing a printer? Are you connecting to another airline i.e. LIAT or American Eagle?
On one of the AA flights this term pretty much no one's luggage arrived. Many people only had one bag arrive with them. It came about 4 days later after much hassling, and I know the student were going to fight to get reimbursed for the necessary stuff they needed to buy, but Im not sure what happened with that. There were many stories of things missing. Brand new sneakers, cutlery, some electronic items, nail polish remover, soap, etc... DO NOT CHECK ITEMS LIKE iPODs OR JEWELRY, carry them on with you.
I personally did not have anything missing (that I know of) but I also packed my bags in a very organized manner, and then put my pillow over everything and strapped it in. (And in my travels to Africa I have never had a problem, so go figure.) I also made sure that my bag was within the allowed weight limit, not even in the "you can pay extra for 20 more lbs." limit to ensure my bags landed with me.
If you still want to bring 4 bags, I GUARANTEE they won't all show up. The majority if not all of the people flying to Grenada will be students who are also trying to transport their entire life to the rock.

so dont know what to expect.
Expect to not have your luggage reach you in time. My luggage (2 bags, both overweight, both paid (50$each) for) reached 6 days after i reached the island. I sincerely suggest not bringing down desktops here. More often than not you run out of space in your room to manage things. A desktop is an unnecessary waste of your study space. A printer? Eh...sure go ahead. You are given a billion handouts for everything and you basically study from those. You also have a quota given for printouts...but is the trip to the library worth it when you absolutely must have something printed out? That's for you to judge.
Back to the luggage, also expect AA staff down here to be least bothered about it. They DON'T CARE. Also, expect to not have your phone answered at the AA office at the airport. And also maybe expect to have them laugh off the matter. It's ROUTINE here. Especially during the beginning of terms, when tons of people carry overweight bags, baggage delays are there on every flight that week or so. As for being ready for it, well, lucky you, you have me.
Have certain neccessities on you in your bagpack and carry on. HOPE to get your stuff on time. But definitely prepare yourself to be without luggage for a few days.

Uhh. I have no idea if there is a Mac place on the rock. Tons of people here have macbooks. I would say the majority have macbooks. So if something happens to it I dont see why you wouldnt be able to find someone to fix it (med students can be computer geeks too.)
That being said, SGU uses PCs... really nice PCs, but they are still PCs. I dont see why there is anything that you would need on your computer that you would need to access. We dont really write papers, or do projects. Its just Unified, Midterm, Final. We take quizzes and read and respond to articles, but those are done through the ANGEL network (analogous to WebCT or Blackboard if you've heard of them.) ANGEL is an online site so you can access from anywhere if need be.
Alright, so maybe you are one of those ppl that takes notes on the computer. In that case, I would say that you should get, if you dont already have, the Microsoft for Mac package (Word, Excel, PPt) and jut back them up to the hard drive or flash drive.

I know of people in FTM that got places on true blue. But a larger majority stays at the grand anse campus. Apart from being a bitch of commute (some would say...getting up in time, travelling to school everyday by bus etc) i don't see any disadvantage of that campus. My roomie was in FTM earlier, thoroughly enjoyed it. And when the studies get to you (and mind you, they most certainly will)...there's the beach.

If you want to practice abroad...ie South Africa and a bunch of other countries a DO degree is worthless....if you don't plan on being abroad at all and are content with a DO then yes it would be better to be a US grad....and some people just do not believe in some aspects of a DO..and yes I know you can go to an MD residency but that would really suck to have to train in DO knowing you dont agree with it.....why does everyone over look the DO abroad issues...bah

You want to make sure you get your flight before they start becoming a hot commodity. You want less layovers, and better airline (ie not LIAT.) Most ppl go thru Miami via AA or thru NY via Delta.
Parents do go to the White Coat ceremony, though its not many. Getting here is expensive, if you feel like your parents need to be there, thats really up to you and them.

As for flight, I haven't booked it yet but I intend to soon. Aug 10-11 on the academic calendar lists Grenada Carnival, so getting there by Aug 10 is advantageous if you want to attend their festivities. Sounds like a good day to be there to me.
I'm not sure about the committee thing. Any current students know a good date to leave the island by in December?
I did a search on the committee dates. They are apparently nothing, only if you failed courses. And even if you fail, there is no reason to stay behind because students don't attend the meetings. So quickest time to leave would be after the last day of exams which is the Dec 10th. So Dec 11th or 12th would be good.

The 10th will be the last day of exams... you dont want to book anything for that night. (Which there prolly arent any flights for anyways.) As far as getting here, the Orientation week is definitely a time to be here. You meet tons of ppl and get to see the island.
Stormy,
Did you schedule your flights yet?
AA has very cheap economy flights around $550 round trip. I want to book but don't know the dates to book'em. I wonder if August 10 coming in and Dec 12 coming out of Grenada will do. Although we kinda have "Committee for satisfactory Academic Progess" from Dec14-16 and I have no idea whether we have to stay for that or not.
The commitee for satisfactory academic progress...its a meeting of deans and advisors for those students who are failing a class or on the verge of failing. They meet to discuss about what to do for those students...if you are not failing...then you don't need to stay for that meeting to take place. I few out of here the next morning after my finals were done....

I was accepted into the CFP back in January via email but I have not yet received anything in the mail. No letter asking for a deposit, etc.. Has anyone who's been accepted into the CFP received anything?

I got my acceptance packet but its sitting at home. Never wanted to go home so bad in my life lol. I was thinking about booking my flight for the 6th or 7th and coming back on the 12th, and paying the few extra bucks to fly straight from miami to gnd. If anyone else is planning on taking this flight, let me know.

Hello,
I'm new to this forum and didn't know where to ask about my chances (as I know it's been discussed quite a bit). If you could could you please tell me where to post them?
And if I'm in the right place, here they are:
Cum. GPA 3.59
Science GPA 3.43
MCAT (pending, but my last practice test was a 15!!! I take it in May)
Plenty of shadowing, volunteering, research, dean's list since 2006, great LORs...
**Cancer survivor** (I hope that will help my chances)
Any thoughts on my chances? I appreciate all criticism.
Thanks!

So there is a thread at the top of the SGU forum that is called "What are my chances??" I think that is pretty self explanatory.
As for your chances without having an MCAT score... GPAs are very good, but if you get an 15 no bueno... if you get a 25, you're set. There is no advice to give without all of your stats. Come back in June when you get your score.

I would suggest that you hit the MCAT out of the ball park. Try to get 33+ and you should be set for US MD schools. Only think of SGU as a back up incase you can't do good on MCAT, and not the first school you want to get into.
Good luck on MCAT.:)

When you say 15, is that on one section or the total score?
If that was the total score then you better start studying and take a review course. A word of caution, the MCAT test is more difficult than the practice ones they offer online. Good luck and study hard...If someone like me can do it anyone can...lol:p

I am flying from Ft. Lauderdale to Trinidad (POS) on Aug. 8th at 6:20 PM. I'm then jumping from from Trinidad to GND the next morning at 6:10 AM. Anyone else going to be on these flights? Anyone want to split a hotel room in Trinidad with me? If not, I might crash on a bench somewhere.

When they receive all the paperwork, your admissions adviser will email you if anything is missing. It may take a week or two. After that AdCom will meet to see if they want to grant an interview.

I actually asked my admissions counselor if she could help speed up the process since Ross is waiting on a deposit from me. It took only 4 days to find out that I was granted an interview after receiving my application and other paperwork. If you talk to your counselor, they will be understanding and let you know the timeline of things and any other questions you have.

She contacted me like a day after...but I had also been in contact with another admissions counselor that I had emailed on my own, so I'm sure she let my counselor know to get in contact with me. Your best bet is to either call if you're really anxious, or just wait it out...it shouldn't be too long

I wasnt given a date for the interview. They sent me contact info of the doc I was going to interview with, and I had to contact him to schedule it. Then you go back to the counselor and notify them that it had been scheduled. I have heard of other ppl being interviewed with a group of students... not where you all sit around with one interviewer, but they all meet at the same time and one by one you are interviewed.

I interviewed with Dr. B in West Palm Beach and it went really well. It was more of a 'get to know me better' interview rather than a forum to determine who can answer questions the best.
Whether or not I got to SGU is still up in the air. I'm worried about the costs. :(

Are there any study aids/books/tools that you would recommend us getting before first term to help us out with those classes (other than textbooks which the schools gives us) - I've heard that the Netter Anatomy Coloring book as well as the Netter flashcards have been useful for some people...any other suggestions?

Netter's book and the falshcards are good. There is also an iPhone app for the flashcards. Also get Grey's Anatomy Review that Dr.L writes. If you want to save moolah... these books are available as PDFs online. BRS Anatomy is also helpful.

The usual interview places are Niagara Falls or Hamilton in Ontario. They might offer you an interview closer to Ottawa but I don't know of any other place

I'm moving there in August...I've browsed lists of clothes items etc. to bring but most of them have been written by guys, any women have suggestions on types of clothing and how much of each type to bring as well as shoes? (ex) how many pairs of jeans, sweats, shorts, shoes (heels, sandals, tennis shoes, boots?), what kind of tops, sweaters, sweatshirts, coats?, dresses (fancy, sundress, casual, club) etc etc...just to be comfortable with the packing situation
are there any events that require formal dress and are there any cultural events that require cultural attire?
basically what do the girls end up wearing the most down there and how can we minimize packing, because lord knows we all have too many clothes for our own good :)

It will be HOT in August BUT it is freezing in the lecture halls and study areas. Bring a sweatshirt/fleece, and some sort of pants (sweatpants/yoga pants) if you want to study in these areas and get cold easily.
The only fancy things you will do are White Coat and Unity Ball (if you even go.) Cute dresses are nice to go out in... but ppl go out in shorts and a cute top too.
If you wear heels when you go out, bring a pair... anything more than 2 pairs I would say is excessive. If you wear flip flops, bring a few pair. Bring sneakers. Dont know why you would need boots...
I think the key to SGU is layering, bc you go from hot to cold so often. Dont be surprised if you wear a tank top with a sweater over it.
What you wear in the summers will be what you wear here. Do you wear sun dresses? Bring sundresses. Do you wear skirts? Bring skirts. You get the point.
And cultural attire? Umm... not sure what you mean.

For the majority of what you bring, stick to shorts/skirts/tank tops/flip flops... Bring a couple casual dresses/sundresses if you can. as the girls generally dress up when going out even if its just to Bananas and maybe bring one "club" dress as alot of people go to Karma once or twice first term and they'll give you trouble if you try to wear jeans there. (This is if you plan on ever going out). Unity ball is fancy- and optional- and if you are short on space you could wear what you wore to White Coat Ceremony. It's going to be really hot and humid in August. I couldn't even wear t-shits. It's a good idea to have a couple of pairs or pants and sweaters for indoors though. The dorms are really cold- I slept with a down comforter on campus. You can always but blankets and things off the post from uppertermers that are moving so I wouldn't waste too much space on bringing warm bedding. And after a term on the island you'll be amazed that you are able to start wearing jeans outside.
Shoes- probably mostly flip flops but bring a couple nice pairs of shoes for going out. Even if you don't go running or to the gym you'll want a pair of funning shoes here in case you go to the waterfalls or things like that. I had rainboots here and another pair of high heeled boots that I wore out with jeans once in a while... but I have way to much stuff here.
All the girls hate their limited wardrobe by the end of first term and ends up bringing a ton of stuff down the next term as well. The key is not to accumulate too much stuff here... I am currently looking at the 20 pairs of shoes in my closet and the mountain of clothes and wondering how I'm going to get it home...
Bring any makeup/hair products etc from home. (Unless you have the same texture hair as the local population- otherwise you'll have trouble finding something suitable)
Don't waste too much space on kitchen supplies, etc- you can easily but them from uppertermers on the post selling their stuff.

1. How hard is it for vegetarians down there? Are the restaurants on/near campus vegetarian friendly and do the grocery stores have tofu and soy products?
2. I've heard most people use ATT service down there...if so can we bring down our iphones and get a local service plan, then just use the wifi connection to browse the internet and use apps and stuff? How exactly would that work?

Being vege is easy. If you are a picky vege, maybe not so much... but I find it easier than being at home. There is always something to eat, on campus and off.
You wouldnt use ATT here, that would cost a fortune. You want to get your phone unlocked and then you can use a local provider. All iTunes and app downloading is blocked on campus, so you would have to go off campus to do that. There is wifi around campus (selectively) but I think you have to go to IT and have something done to your phone (or anything thats not a computer) for the wifi to work. The data plans from Digicel and Lime arent too bad (about 50 EC a month, ~$20) so some ppl just do that.

The Indian Cultural Students Association (ICSA) holds a cultural night after midterms every term. Given you are asian (~sharma), you might want to bring along a semi formal kurta pyjama or something. If you are in the August batch, then ICSA also celebrates diwali (october - november) on campus, and that's also a very "indian" event.
Other than that, the ONLY time you'll need formals would be the white coat ceremony and maybe the unity ball. Bring a pair of khakis and a pair of dress shoes, incase you visit a fancy place for dinner. More often than not, you'd be in very casual clothes.

Hi boys and girls, I've applied for the class of Aug 2010 and I was recently sent an interview invite from SGU. However in the invite, it says that the committee recommends that I improve my MCAT score. Do you guys know what this means? Why did they offer me an interview if they believe that I need to make an improvement? Is there any chance that I may get accepted without having to redo my MCAT by convincing my interviewer otherwise?
My stats are about 3.3 GPA, 25S MCAT (PS:7, VR:10, **: 8), and lots of research, extracurriculars and letters of rec.
Thank you.

From what Ive heard and read, the recommendation to improve your score is more like a requirement that you take it again. They will interview you now, and you will need to retake it in April or what have you.
Just curious what your sGPA is... bc your stats dont look to awful, even considering you are applying for Aug.

I talked to the financial advisor a little while ago and she said she'll be contacting all the students at the end of this month for a step-by-step webinar on how to apply for loans. Until then, she told me to just fill out my FAFSA and wait it out until the webinar. Does anyone else have any other information than that...if so, please share! :)
