I just got back from the Islands. Its a beautiful place for sure. ITs way too expensive but there are ways of gettin around by making the right choices. I'm putting a link which should give you some idea about the island. I tried taking as many pictures as possible of the school and dorm and the island itself. I personally felt a bit awkard taking pictures of dorm rooms as they were occupied, so I don't have much but you can still get an idea from what I have. So just check it out...Let me know if there are any questions...PM me.......

Hey Caribstyle... I just got back Monday as well, I wish I would have met up with you... man that place is sweet, but it is expensive (gas is $3.75 a gallon)... I too liked the school and can't wait to go there... With the Ritz and Westin right next to the school it is a awesome place for a school... The dorm rooms were awesome... I even went on a scuba trip with Brice (school administrator) as he is in charge of the Scuba club and 6 of us total went out... I was thinking of bringing my H1 Hummer but after seeing the gas I think I will go with a Daewoo over there as you definately need a car over there....

Thanks for these GREAT pictures. At least I know I will not starve at SMU. Fast foods and Haagan-Dazs.... That's one plus over SABA.

Thanks again.

Thank you for posting the pictures. They show how beautiful the island is, as well as alleviating my worries about what food establishments are on the island.

Thanks once again. I look forward to my arrival in August.

Thanks for posting up the pictures. I am attending the August class but I am visiting the school first. I will go there a month from now. I will try to post up pictures for all the applicants/incoming students too.

Any suggestions on what to bring to the island for the trip OR school?

Is having a car really important or can I get by with a bicycle?

bike is maybe a 10 min ride to school but if you want to see more of the island a car would be better

I would highly advise on getting a car. Makes transportation a lot easier and convenient.

With the fastly approaching rain season, this would clearly be the best option. For about $3,000 CI you can get a pretty decent car.

I must say these pics are great! Really makes me consider SMU over St. Eustatius! And I'm glad there are a bunch of fast food establishments!! But, whatever happened to the vast lobster on the beaches!! I was really looking forward to that! :-)
HOw much would a car cost again there (US$)? Also, do GSM cell phones work down there???
Thanks again!

Many people in this forum have said that $3500(US) will get you a decent Japanese car, and I do not know about GSM (AT&T?)...

all that GSM is referring to is cell phones. there are 3 frequency bands that cell phones run on. lets call them A, B, C ( i cant remember the specific names). the US/Canada runs on A, Europe/Carib/SouthAmerica/Africa runs on B and Asia runs on C. the phones here work for B and C. typically any US phone will run on A only. if you bring your phone from the US you need to make sure that you get a tri-band phone. this will work all throughout the world (but you will need to get service from local companies).

i hope that this cleared things up for you

good luck!!!

Grand Cayman is the one of the most modern islands in the Carib. It's facilities match those of the US. It is also considered to be the 5th biggest offshore banking country in the world (after: London, NY, Tokyo, and Switzerland). Transition to the island is made much more easier because of this. This is very important when moving to another country.

You will not find another Med School that is on as good as an island as SMU!

For a decent car, that would run you around $3,000CI ($3750US).

I bought a GSM cell phone (Nokia 6200) from EBAY before I came. It works perfectly fine here!
