Where is everyone from? I'm sorta unknown about what conditions to expect. I have worked at the Medical School for my undergrad university for a year and I more or less know what to expect from my school, but as for AUC, I was wondering if anyone knew if there is research required, clinical work required during breaks?
Thanks

-no required research...
-during basic sciences (on st. maarten) the breaks between semesters are about 2 weeks long so no clinical work is required.
there are some opportunities to be involved in both... you can also create your own.

I used the Interfolio service. It is possible for your letter writer to upload the LOR on the internet and you will know instantly that it has arrived. Then you can send it to as many people as you need. It is a small fee, but with the instant upload, it won't get lost.

You should probably know in 3 weeks or so. I was put on a waitlist for an extra month and then got in. But expect about 3 weeks if MEAS is on top of your game. They will call you and tell you what the consensus is and they will follow up what they told you on the phone with a letter.

They are not there. I think something crazy like 30-40% drop out of Ross. The attrition rate at AUC according to their page on here is only 7.5% which seems pretty solid. Its no 1% like american MD programs but it is still solid. I am excited to only have around 100 in this upcoming May class. That I can handle.

I really want to check out Cote D'Azure or something else within walking distance of the campus that is less than $1000/month. I could probably get away with living in the dorms for a semester, but only a two bedroom and I hope that they don't charge extra for utilities. Is the internet in the dorms as restrictive as I heard it was?

In for 10!.. I mean may 2010.
Flying in from Seattle, WA. Aren't the dorms decent?.. and whats this talk about 'restricted internet'?
restrictive in the sense that, you can't do P2P programs, and sometimes the speeds may slow down especially when everyone is on campus studying... you know the stuff you weren't allowed to do in undergrad, well depends on which institution you went to
Otherwise than that, the free "constant" electricity (all the AC you can use! great for the summer months, so I need to find one of you people and shack up) and "free" water is pretty good, not having to deal with the local utility company, oh you'll love that, and whatnot.
The dorms = best place to live, nice and close, especially when you need to take that mid-day nap before you enter anatomy lab, and change cloths after you get out of anatomy lab.
Also, goooooooooooood luck trying to find a decent place under $1000 after utilities, it's do-able but just don't expect it.

Everyone uses skype. It works well in the dorms. I dont think anyone uses vonage.
I think Voyage was blocked due to Bandwidth restraints or something other ** reason. But, if you are still in the states, I recommend trying to get a Google Voice number, this will let you text to home on your computer. Also if you want, there is a way to make Gvoice calls for free, although this may be a little more convoluted

I got my admissions packet finally and was going through it. It lists a bunch of immunizations that we need to have and I have almost all of them. Then the last one says "influenza".
Which influenza shot do we need?.. the seasonal or the H1N1?
Also.. we don't need to be immunized for varicella if we've already had chicken pox as a kid right?.. They just aren't very clear in what they want on those forms.
Can anyone help answer these questions?.. I appreciate it!

Yeah.. I know what you mean. For me, it makes sense to come back up... then again between 1st and 2nd semester we may have to find another place to live if we get kicked out of the dorms.. so I dunnoo yet..
After the semester, especially for winter semester, you will definitely want to go home, or at least have some friends and family come down to you. You will find that many people won't be on the island, usually there will be a couple of students, but otherwise you are pretty by yourself.
Also, winter semester break is the longest of the 3, and it is well worth the money to go back home. You will be glad that you can return to real civilization! Although, you do get used to the daily life of a medical student, and may start missing it... well anyways As for switching places from the dorms, it depends on where you go. Usually if you have made some good friends, which you definitely will unless you are a total recluse, you can store your stuff at somebodies apartment and fly in a couple of days early and move into your new place.

On our admissions packet, under the require immunizations listed, it asks for a "titer count". I have all of the immunizations, but does this mean that we have to get bloodwork done and have these titers counted?

It depends. If the immunizations were done a while ago, they will need to take a titer level to confirm you still have immunity. If they were recent, you should be good.
My insurance doesn't cover anything!
You should be nice and ready for when you arrive then. The school mandated insurance also does not cover anything.

Just because you received the immunizations, doesnt mean you are immune... thus why schools want a titer. And I am sorry to say that even for more recent vaccines you will need to get a titer. Most schools require Hep B at least, and may require Varicella. If you havent ever gotten vaccinated for Hep B then you probably just need to show that you started the series. Some ppl had chicken pox, and thus should be immune to it, but may not be, and some were vaccinated, but it could have not taken.
This stuff is more important for clinicals, and you will definitely need to show titers for that.
*If you get the titers done now, save the paper work... it is good for life, so you will never have to get another Hep B titer.

eh im not sure when we HAVE to be there by....i picked the 30th because it was the best for my flight...cheapest/no long lay over! I think orientation starts May 4th....so I'd say the 3rd? Also, I was told if you are living in campus housing that it should be open the 29th or the 30th to move in...

Thanks, Ubuntu, looking forward to it. Anyone else a bit concerned about the types of residency programs AUC students are matching into? It seems all you ever read is how IMG students are receiving all types of prejudice during Match. However, the Chief of Emergency Medicine at the hosital I work at is a Carib grad who said he had no problems. Thoughts? (and yes, I know this subject has been beaten to death in other places, just curious what new students thought)

eh...the carib/IMG grads that I know have had no issues matching but they did bring up all the stigma and such. I met with an Irish grad a few months ago and some programs wouldn't look at him because they thought he didn't speak english because he was an IMG? FUNNY! but he ended up matching at Mayo so it can't be that bad :) I guess for the future as long as you are realistic and aren't expecting to match derm/rads/ortho it should be okay. As most everyone agrees, matching will become harder and harder form IMG/FMGs. I guess I want primary care and would be totally fine being in a community program so I havn't thought all that much about the "what if" i don't match cat surg/gas/EM...but eh

I was accepted to AUC a month ago and since then, I've been waiting to hear back from SGU. Up til now it's been between AUC and SGU. Although, SGU was my first choice and the interview went well, I think I'm gonna go ahead and send the deposit to AUC, mainly because of the cost disparity and the smaller class sizes, so I guess I'll be joining you guys in May.

Wow, how they can lose that stuff is beyond me... everything I have sent them, I did so overnight and called them to make sure they received them. I'm worried now, because I still have to send the health clearance, police letter, and passport photos which I just took.

You can fax some of your documents to them. but with those like the scholarship letter, they will want u to mail that. Call and ask them which documents u can fax.
Health clearance form can be a bitch cuz they ask for a lotta unnecessary stuf, like asking your doctor to add a personal note to your X-ray results. Also don't forget ask for a printed lab results for all the immunization in addition to the health clearance form from AUC which your doctor has to fill out.
I just mailed (ceritified mail) in my financial aid documents this morning. I'm also starting in May, see ya.

I'd get on that asap...go down to your court house and fill out the paperwork...they can take a while to get to you unless you expedite the process...which costs a hundred bucks or so if I remember correct...regardless...get down and get the process started asap

So, if I don't have a valid passport, how do I go about getting one?
Here is my advice: The average passport fee is $95. The current processing time is 4-6 weeks. There is a $25 processing fee that is accrued no matter what. So call it $120. Then, if you need it expedited, the fee is $60. This ensures you will receive your passport in 2-3 weeks ( good timing for right now). Total cost: $180. Finally, you can schedule an appointment at a passport processing center for "passports required for foreign visas". Not sure what happens here. Either way, you can find this info on the US Gov website for passports. I would spend the extra $60, get it in 2-3 weeks, and not worrry about it. Let me know if you need more info, I will look it up for you

The actual process takes like 5min.
At the police station the people didn't really have anyone assigned to do it... so a nice lady with a gun brought me to the back and fingerprinted me on a machine. No ink required.

It took 3 weeks from getting my prints taken to getting my letter of good standing. It was a bit of a pain in the *** because my local PD said they weren't authorized to write such a letter and couldn't provide me any direction (they had no idea where to send me). Ultimately I had to go through the state to get what I needed.

Withdraw the max for the first 2 semesters and scale back as needed.

Great advice. You wont have a clue what kinda money you will wind up spending... a lot of it has to do with if you eat out a lot. You can say you wont, but when precious study hours are taken up with food shopping and cooking, then getting take out is pretty appealing. Take the money now, and if you dont use some of it take less next time.

Another starting in May here. Anyone else decide to start off-campus, and if so, where?

CONGRATS May matriculants! I recently submitted my app for sep entrance and am curious to know how students get around the island for grocery shopping etc is there a shuttle? I was unsure of where exactly to post this question so hopefully someone can provide me with an answer in here. thank you.
