Hi,
I would like to start this thread to catalog the good & bad places to eat on the island. Most people have places they really like and it would be great to share these amongst ourselves.
I'll start.
GYRO
The famous Gyro truck in Marigot that shows up from 7:00pm to 6:00am in the parking lot of the Marigot Marina.
INDIAN FOOD
Pride of india in Simpson Bay. Good food but a bit pricy.
Satar in Maho right in back of Cheri's Cafe. I've heard this was good but haven't tried it yet.
BBQ RIBS & CHICKEN
The BBQ place located in the parking lot across the street from Honda/Hyundai dealer in Cole Bay. This is basically a BBQ stand set up in the parking lot. (Next to Daily Express). The food is awesome and so cheap. A whole rack of ribs, is $3.00, $5.00 with sides. Many students live off this stuff!
FISH
The best Yellowtail I've ever had was at Lee's just after the bridge in Simpson Bay. Excellent Lobster but outrageously expensive (the lobster).
Apparently Uncle Harry's next to the airport is excellent. I haven't confirmed this myself but several people have told me to try it.
*** DESPERATELY SEEKING... ***
CHINESE. I tried the one next to Satar in Maha. It's edible, I'm still alive but not sure I'll return. Any advice here?
VIETNAMESE. ???
THAI. ???
ITALIAN. ???
STEAK. ???
OK guys, let's get this thing going. I'll compile the results and post them as Word file.

VIETNAMESE.
Mai's & Le Vietnam (both on the French Side)...ate at Le Vietnam and it was awesome and authentic, but they only spoke vietnamese and french...
THAI.
Thai Garden on the french side is the only Thai restaurant I've found and in my opinion CRAP (and pricey crap, at that!). Waste your money elsewhere.
ITALIAN. ???
There's a hole in the wall Itallian joint behind Casino Royale (near the new Sitar)...very reasonable and have yet to have anything bad on the menu...go for the Carbonara...to die for! :D
STEAK. ???
Juliana Cafe (above the airport) has some decent steak, but by far my favorites have been anything from Pineapple Pete's or Peg Leg Pub (both in Simpson Bay).
OK guys, let's get this thing going. I'll compile the results and post them as Word file.

Chinese: None-->don't bother, they are all crap. They can't even measure up to Panda Express or Magic Dragon(yeah... they can't even compare to MALL FOOD!!!!!!! )
Japanese: None (Think super expensive and the fish isn't all that good either. )
Indonesian food: there is only one on the island. it's good for the island... duh...
Gyros: Martyrs right next to the movie theatre is good too.
Indian food:
Sitar is pretty good for night time but a bit pricey. The lunch buffet on friday lunches are bland but decent if you don't feel like driving too far.(10 bucks for the buffet which includes a soda)
Lal's right across from the airport is pretty good and cheap if you are willing to get takeout or stand the horrible smell of the lagoon(or the trash, not sure which one it was). Look to spend about 10-15 bucks per person here... I don't think they give AUC discounts(at least I never got it)
Anan's in Simpson Bay is pretty good too( at least that's what my Indian friends tell me). They have an AUC discount and a larger menu selection than Sitar. Drive past the Burger king and take a right into the first street. It will be on your left hand side with a tiny little sign.
Pride of India: pretty good food with a lunch buffet on Sunday for 10 bucks. The buffet is decent(I think it's better than Sitar's buffet). The food at night is pretty good too. Jon, and a bunch of us went there for dinner once and it was pretty good.
Fast food:
CHURCH's Chicken! $2.50 for a 2 piece meal with mash potatos and a honey biscuit.... AND THEY DELIVER! 'nuff said.
KFC-->gross... super gross
Burger King->not too bad but be ready to be stung by mosquitos if you eat at the one in Simpson Bay. Quality varied each time I went but overall it is fine.
Taco Bell-->The one in Phillipsburg is good. Compared to the taco bells in Seattle, they put a bit more meat in their food.
McDonald's: Haven't tried it but they sell Heinikens(sp?) there and they have something called a Mini Mac and a Mega Mac... I guess it's like a atrophy and hypertrophy Big Mac.

Food. Mmmm...
I went a bit berserk with some of my reviews in this topic some time ago....

But as usual, I'm too lazy to retype it or even cut and paste it.
Hope it helps a bit.

We have also tried the chinese restaurant behind Cheri's and next to Pizza Pasta-it was edible but I could make better at home! The Laguna is an Italian Restaurant past the airport and is good-they also give a discount to locals which they gave to us.
Happy food hunting!

the gyros on the french side are awesome. they really compete with the one's i had in greece a couple of breaks ago.
for steak: Pegleg's is the best. i know that they have been slow lately with their cook times but i love that place. a bunch of us go there after each round of exams.
tequila's in simpson bay has awesome fajitas; greal salmon fajitas.

So would the quarter pounder with cheese (or, since we are in Dutch SXM, a Royale with Cheese) represent a metplastic Big Mac?

Wow, the one time I went there, I thought it was some of the worst Mexican food I had ever eaten. Course, I dunno where Speros is from, either, his idea of Mexican may be far different than mine!
To be fair, though, I haven't had their fajitas, just some burrito combo platter or something. I wasn't impressed. :(

Jon, actually, I would have to guess that, since in Bic Macs it's really about the numbers of patties, I would say that the Mini Big-Mac, Big-Mac and the Mega Big-Mac could be Monosomy, Disomy and Trisomy, respectively.
The QP w/ Cheese actually has a different sized patty-- So, if I had to guess I would say that it's actually Hypertrophic, whereas the Mega Bigmac would be Hyperplastic.
Although, the QP w/ Cheese could just be Macrocytic. I think we'll need a ruling on this.
Steadman's says "Quarter Pounder" or "Royale" are acceptable.
Yes, I have finally sank to the true depth of geekdom. The island is getting to me.

the mexican i am used to is soooo bad that i never ate it. that might the reason i liked it so much. it probably is a step up from what i am used to (southeast georgia and mexican food... thats an oxymoron) . also, the only thing there i have tried is the salmon fajitas which is what i get whenever i go back.

Their menu is good ol americana food. The sandsiches on french bread and the tex mex items are quite good. Mamma Mia's is pretty decent for Italian, although the service sorta sucks.

We've always been pretty happy with Rancho Argentenian Steak House, although it's pricey. I've found that if we go with our kids, everyone is happy beause you can order the grill with chicken, steak, ribs and sausage.
I love the chimchuree (sp??) sauce they serve with the steak.
Anand's was always my fav for Indian. For good Indian food AND atmosphere, we also liked Shivsagar in P'burg too. Fun watching the tandoori oven through the window.
Another favorite we had - don't know if the food is still good.... Captian Oliver's in Oyster Pond (over on the east side of the Island, over from the old "campus" ... Defiance Haven)..
In the good old days... there was a Taco Bell at the corner of the main road and Pelican (near Indiana Beach Bar).
You could drive through and order tacos, beer and margaritas from your car!!!!

this is strange but I'm gonna add something that I never thought I would add...
Cafeteria food... well, actually just their crispy fries.
Ask for CRISPY fries and not just the regular fries. They are fairly good, I steal some from Aaron everyday.

hands down the gyro truck is the best gyros on the island or even in the u.s.
indian food, try singh restaurant in pburg, not the classiest digs but the food is good i also like pride of india.
jamaican food, over the hill and you can get the best patties, coco bread and carrot cake all for about $3.50.
chinese food, the one in cole bay, i forgot the name, they opened a supermarket right next door to it.
grill food, try that restaurant next to the school, forgot the name, it's better than ricks place, if that place still exists.
italian food, a bit pricey but atmosphere is nice and food is superb and they treat you like a vip, laguna restaurant near the airport.
mexican food, didn't think it existed when I was there.
seafood, the lolos in marigot, cheap, food is good, the people are nice, only thing is you have to eat w/ plastic forks and styrofoam.
sometimes indianas has a lobster special where it's only like 12.95 or something.

There's a little hole in the wall Dominican restaurant that sells fresh Dominican food at cheap prices. I dont remember the name of it but its off of airport road, right before you get to cole bay, take a left before a blue cafe on your left hand side and go down that street. It'll be on your left hand side and it has a big yellow sign. I wish I can provide more info, but thats all I can remember...sorry. But check it out... try their fried plaintains (also KFC has fried plantains now that I think about it..hmmm)...
ENJOY!

Chinese food on the island is pretty hopeless...your best bet is the nicer one in Phillipsburg (Golden Dragon or something like that), but even that is quite dismal compare to what you can find stateside...
Mai serves some pretty good Vietnamese food.
The gyro place is very good too!!

chinese food, the one in cole bay, i forgot the name, they opened a supermarket right next door to it.
It's called Lido's, located across from Marshall Motor's. It is the same place that has the large grill outside where you can purchase excellent ribs and lots of sides for only $5.
ITALIAN- I have been to a few Italian restaurants and Tutta Pasta is by far my favorite. The food was really fresh and it sort of reminded me of one of my favorite's back home, Olive Garden. It is a small restaurant located in the same lot as Simpson Bay Pharmacy, just across the street from Jimbo's. Another good place that is closer to the school is Bella Napoli, located behind Atlantis Casino on the main road, which has a large selection of pizzas.
