Hi i'm starting in January. Does anyone know when the dorms are normally assigned? and how far are the dorms from the campus and library? Will it be worth getting a car?
:noidea:

Hello,

The room assignment will be done by End of October the latest.
The RH is 2,2 miles from Campus. There is no need to get a car unless you are desperate for one.
Most students use bicylce and local bus.
Please remember that the check in date is Saturday January 2nd

Let me know if you need more information and email me at sguilbard@smu.ky

do a search for cars on the island. You will find so much information about having a car on the island.

dont get a bicycle, scooter or anything with less than 4 wheels. People on the island dont know how to drive. i know students who got hit or almost got ran over and trust me, you do not want to take a chance like that on the day before your exam. Then you have to think about if you really want to look like as if you decided to take a dive in the beach across the street with your uniform on just before showing up for your first class in the morning.

It's well worth it to either buy a car or carpool ( 2 friend put money in one car ) and think about living in the same apt. after first semester is over. The bus service... well if you calculate the time and money spent on a bus service, you are better off investing that money into something that will get you around when you need to and where you need to, and eventually be able to get most if not all of that money back by selling the car once you are ready to leave the island. Unless things have changed over the past year or so, the value of cars dont drop much on the island from what i remember.

dont just buy the first box with 4 wheels... look around for the first few days, try Sony's Auto (http://www.sonysauto.com/) . I'm not saying that this is the best place to buy your car, but this is " one " of the places where you can look at.

Ghost Rider,

This is another time and now cars are much harder to sell than what it used to be. Ecay trade is also a good place to check for cars.
I agree that scooters should not be recommended and if you get a bicycle, you need to be very careful.
Carpool is a good way to go but you need to make sure who you are carpooling with....

If anyone wants to save money and not live in the dorms, but share an apartment with someone in SMB, let me know. I have one dog and will be finding a place before Jan close to school. There is a lot for rent, and sharing a 2bd or 3 bd will save a lot- esp. if you're into studying and not playing beer pong all night, let me know.

Hi wannabdvm,

I tried to pm you but couldn't. I am up for talking about shared housing. I think we are the only 2 on here that are going to the Veterinary School.

Maybe you can pm me.

No i think this will be close to the final number. I would guesstimate between 80 and 100 at max.
btw, thanks for the congratulations!
