Any news on CAAM-HP? Seeing as we are a school in the Caribbean we should be at least accredited in the caribbean.

Email Dr. Mc or someone higher up about it. AUA has applied. No reason smu shouldn't. I emailed him a long time ago about it and he said he would look into it.

Xavier is in the process of applying as well. Yet MUA, SMU and Saba are not. Me thinks it's an Equinox problem :p

Yeah but it would legitimize our school to an extent to be approved by caamhp.Especially with the california fiasco it would give more fuel to the argument that states shouldn't base their licensing issues on california's decision.

Exactly, thats what I thought. Having CAAM-HP accreditation can only be a good thing for the school. As for Cali, I think that it will come eventually but CAAM-HP would be a step in the right direction. At least it will show that we are officially recognised in all of the caribbean not just the Cayman Islands. It would also attract more local students and faculty to the school making us more stable as a school. (ie University of the West Indies, St Georges and Ross)
After that Cali accreditation will be more of a possibility.
Anything that raises the profile of the school is a good thing for those of us that are already here and for those coming in the future

the school cannot get minor things in order and you are expecting them to so what now?
Everyday there is a new drama, new problem and new headache. Do these people in orlando even realize what they are putting their students thru.

not really, the CAAM-HP issue is out there so that carib students from schools like UWI get preference and jobs over us. its a way to keep locals from attending schools based for US students as a way around their local schools.
when all this went down w/ caricom and the like, i was on the island and had a series of long convos about this with one of the major heads of the hospital system on the island

I was born in Grand Cayman but grew up in New York. I agree with the original poster, we should try and get caribbean accreditation so that more people like me can apply to a school in our hometown. I have applied to the University of the West Indies for september 2010 but they follow the european medical system MBBS not MD and the teaching is geared to european standards not USMLE. I was accepted at St Georges (they are CAAM-HP accredited) but I can't afford their fees.

caymanian born/residents get tuition breaks at SMU.

with 99.9% of students planning to practice in the US/Canada doesn't seem to make sense to push towards CAAM especially when we are cleared in Cayman. makes more sense to want to push for better licensure in the US

I'm looking to practice in the states anyway, but it would have been good to have the extra option. I will still apply to SMU for Summer 2010 anyway.

Dont you know that UWI students routinely pass the USMLE-- and with ease!
Dont you know that UWI grads are accepted in all 50 states?
You have a better chance of passing the USMLE if you attend UWI than if you attend any of the offshore schools, as borne out by the statistics.
UWI opened a third medical school in Barbados, if you are smart you would apply. With your place of birth you have a very good chance of being accepted.

As homer simpson would say, it's not that they don't understand its that they don't care
...and I have to wonder...some of those on here, not to name names, defend EVERYTHING SMU does down to the last detail. They're 100% perfect and there's a great reason for their most asinine or mundane decisions or lack there off. University official?

actually UWI is a great school, and very hard to get into. also, just because someone is born in Cayman does not mean they are a Caymanian national.

I know the University of the West Indies is a better school, but basic sciences in UWI is an extra 2 years thats the only reason i'm looking at SMU and others. Plus i'm not interested in California
I already have a place at UWI for next september so i'm not that worried. Its likely that I will accept the UWI offer anyway as its accepted in all 50 states and Its CAAM-HP accredited

Keep bothering them, this is whats important. Maybe they will include this information in the next newsletter instead of cutting and pasting old articles from 6 months ago.

Did you check out scholarships for Caribbean nationals? Not sure what's there, just assuming there's something. The Peace Scholarship is available to us Canadians.
