Zhongshan School of Medicine originated in 1957. It can be dated back to Boji Medical School founded in 1866--the oldest school of western medicine in China. The history of the school can be generally divided into 3 phases.
The first phase: from 1866 to early 1950s (1866~1953)
In 1866, Peter Parker, a American preacher and diplomat set up Boji Medical School where Sun Yat-sen studied medicine and was actively engaged in revolutionary campaign. Subsequently, Boji Medical School merged into Lingnan University and the Medical College of Lingnan University was established. Soon afterwards, private-run Hackett Medical College was merged into the Medical College of Lingnan University
Another significant headstream of Zhongshan School of Medicine is Guangdong Public Medical School which was established in 1909. It evolved into Guangdong Public Medical University, which was subsequently incorporated into State-run Guangdong University and developed into Medical College of Guangdong University. Later on, the official name was change into Medical College of Sun Yat-sen University.
The second phase: from early 1950s to 2001(1953-2001)
In 1953, Lingnan University Medical College and Zhongshan University Medical College were merged into South China Medical College. Thereafter, The South China Medical College changed its name consecutively as Guangzhou Medical College, Zhongshan School of Medicine, and Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Sciences. In this stage, under the leadership of the famous medical educationalist Ke Lin, Zhongshan School of Medicine established the perfect modern system of medical education, boasting a good number of the masters and the famous experts who had tremendous influence both at home and abroad. The teaching, scientific research and medical service developed outstandingly. It became the highest medical institution in Central South China and one of the six key medical colleges and universities in China.
In the 1960s, Zhongshan School of Medicine boasted of eight first-rate professors including Chen Xintao, who were nicknamed “Eight Bhuda’s Warriors”, when there were only thirty-three first-rate professors around the country. Nowadays, the oil portraits of Ke Lin and eight first-rate professors are displayed on the second floor of the medical library in north campus of Sun Yat-sen university. Professor Chen Xintao had made prominent achievement in preventing and controlling schistosomiasis, and hence was interviewed by Chairman Mao twice.
The third phase: from the amalgamation of two universities until now (2,001 ~ )
In October 2001, Sun Yat-sen University and the Sun Yat-sen University of Medical Science were amalgamated to form the new Sun Yat-sen University. Since then, our college had entered a brand-new phase of development. Zhongshan School of Medicine keeps a leading edge in discipline development, scientific research, talents cultivating, laboratory scale and research apparatus and equipment, and laboratory infrastructure development among its counterparts in China. It has become a renowned academic institute both at home and abroad for basic medical instruction, scientific research and technological development, with diverse branches of learning and superior infrastructure as well as abundant personnel in teaching and research.
With the internationalization of medical education being promoted in our college, we engaged seven foreign teachers in the undergraduate teaching in 2007. In 2006 and 2007, for the first time we enrolled 200 foreign students, from Nepal, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, etc. for all-English courses. This all-English preclinical medical education program has been approved and praised by Zhang Xinsheng, the Deputy Minister of Education.
