I am reading both. My Kaplan book is 2006 not updated new ones.
I think that really depends on how much you can remember and understand.

Dont do both, that will take too long.
The Step Up Book has better organization, pictures, and is more fun to read. The details and information in Kaplan (i.e. from the mouth and mind of Conrad Fischer) is far more in depth but is painfully dry.
The simple fact is that both will work (get the 2009 notes for best results), but you should pick the one you LIKE TO READ. Combine your reading with First Aid and a qbank, and you will be more than prepared.
Personally, I like Kaplan. Kaplan did well for me on MCAT and Step 1. I personally would use Kaplan, but you need to sit down with both of them, next to each other. Read an important topic (HTN, Seizure, Hyponatremia). Compare one versus the other. Which did you like to read more? Which did you remember more from? Pick the one you like.
in short, either will work. Combine with FA and qbank. Do NOT do both
