I am wondering if anyone has any information on what the requirements are to practice / do residency in California after studying at UAG.

Specifically:

1.Do they require the social service year?

2.Is it a requirement of the state medical board that you have a year of clinical experience in the U.S before entering a residency or is that decided by the individual residency programs?

3.Can you do your internship in Mexico and residency in California?

I have been doing some guardias here in Guadalajara where I have met international program grads who are doing their internship here. These interns are from New York and have explained that in New York it's up to each individual residency whether they require the year of U.S experience or not. It seems that they have done their research. I am wondering if it is even remotely possible to do internship here and to do residency in California.

Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

yes, you can do a residency in California. You must have a titulo. Good scores on the Steps and is up to the program about your experience. Oh, yeah1 You need the California letter! without it you can't enter the residency in California!

I don't see how a letter of rec from a CA doc is that important? I would think a letter of Rec from any doc in the U.S would hold the same value. Except maybe in the case where you apply to a program where the doc who wrote you a letter practices at. CA needs to ease-up on the restrictions!

His words were "California Letter". That is what California calls it. It is simply one more retarded thing from the Charles Manson state.

Ha.

My friend (a US-DO grad) was told the following by the Cal Med Board while trying - with considerable difficulty - to complete the paperwork on his license for fellowship training in California:

"Sir, do you realize what a privilege it is to practice medicine in the State of California?"

Ridiculous.

The Californa Letter is from what I read (I am not from the land of fruits and nuts): "Postgraduate Training Authorization Letter" that is demanded for any for IMG/FMG. I do not think it was reqiered for 5th pathway graduates, but you can add this to list of things the AMA has done for us.

The "Postgraduate Training Authorization Letter" (old name: California Letter) IS REQUIRED FOR APPLYING TO CALIFORNIA RESIDENCY.

Make sure to thank the AMA for making you an FMG, and giving you more practice in completing more endless paperwork :)
