View Full Version : Praise for the French police

Since landing in Sint Maarten, I haven't been the most staunch supporter of anything French (including their cuisine, which I haven't found to be all that wonderful, as some people seem to think  ), but last night, I ahd an experience that was quite pleasant, in a disturbing sort of way.
After watching some you local punk and his buddies walking down the sidewalk indiscriminantly puncturing the tires of cars (one of which was mine), myself and 2 friends ran them down (yeah, ME! lol) and detained one of them rather forcibly.
Upon the arrival of the French Gendarmerie (sp?), we were treated very well, with much respect and very efficiently. We spent an hour or so going over things, then went to the station and filled out reports. We were assured that the young man would be *thoroughly* interrogated as to the identities of his three friends, and that we would be reimbursed for the cost of replacing the tire.
Anyways, long story short, I have had dealing with many French on this island, and the majority of them tend to annoy me, but there have been a few who were quite decent. EVERY SINGLE ONE of the police (a special riot squad, as it turned out) impressed me greatly, and I found myself thankful that the incident occured on the French side, since I know for a fact (from previous experience) that the Dutch police have absolutely no inclination to help prevent or solve any type of crime occuring against most students. Just my experiences, and I'm sure others' may vary, but just wanted to say thanks to the French, for once!
Good night!

Where else on earth do you see good looking police men, with great looking legs, wearing shorts while on duty?
Not in DC or NYC.
Not at Dunkin' Donuts.
Another reason to love SXM.

As much as we like to bag on the French's military prowess. Their military and police are actually pretty top-notch. it's just their leaders that are idiots that get them trashed on the battlefield.

I am not surpised at all. The French gendarmes are actual French people from the homeland, while the Dutch police are locals... Enough said. Additionally, if I get sick while on the island, I can promise you that'll I'll go to the new French hospital in Marigot before I go to the Dutch one.
On another note, people are people. The French love their kids too.
I'm not at all ashamed to be French (Canadian) myself.

Well, I don't know - there's that old story about hell being where the cops are french, and the cooks british, heaven being the opposite.

Alas, just like american leaders. And english. Germans. Spanish.

you have it totally wrong. Here's how it goes:
Heaven: cops english, swiss run hotels, germans fix the cars, italians are lovers, french chefs.
Hell: italians fix the cars, french run the hotels, english are chefs, swiss are lovers and Germans run the police.
Please get your stereotypes correct.

We should get some balance here. Some Communist propaganda. They have good propaganda posters. The hammer and sickle really lent itself to iconic imagry. The Nazis were a little over the top if you ask me.

Well, so you agree that in heaven french aren't involved in law enforcement, anyway.
BTW, I'ver heard at least three or four different versions.

I just don't see why people always rave about French cuisine. I've tried quite a bit of it, and haven't found any of it I'd take over Granny Clampett's.

I got some really god chinese food there recently. Place in Maho, all the way at the end. I guess near the Platinum Room, although I'm not sure exactly where the PR is. Food was good. G

Interesting that in American movies and the American mind there is something about the French being great lovers... but it doesn't show up here.
And even though TRMedic doesn't agree, :( I still say Grand Case is the place for food. (I wasn't a French Cuisine fan until SXM).
Now I'd kill for creme brulee....
just don't make me walk through the Air France line at the airport in the midday heat! :x eeewwww

loved the fish pot. yum ! I do like French food, but the service is well.....so French
I have never considered the French to be all things Romantic. Too much body odor, and bad nicotine breath
Now the Italians and Spanish ! Va Va vroom !

ICK! 12 noon, Saturday, hot sun, TONS of people in line.... this was my weekend. Damn, Faith, you must be psychic or something! lol I stood in line there for about 2 hours, but thankfully we had a tond of luggage, so we surrounded ourselves with it, made a moving island in the line, and none of the French people could gety close enough to waftf their body odor onto the rest of us. Then again, in that heat, maybe we smelled just like them, so we didn't notice it! lol
I found out today that even the French police take the 12-3PM siesta on the French side, too.... Just when I started to respect them! lol
And FLK, don't forget the body HAIR on the women to go along with the body ODOR. ICK!

I've never flown Air France. Hopefully, I'll always be able to find other options...
When checking in for flights at AA though, I would actually LEAVE the terminal and walk OUTSIDE on the sidewalk so I wouldn't have to get close.
I walked close to the line ONCE. That was enough for a lifetime.
(now anyone on this board with French heritage probably really hates me!) :?
Hey, TRMedic, I looked at your pics on the website. Was the Hurricane Drill in SXM? Who was involved? (very cool, as a DMAT member - I love field medicine)

Faith, which team? I was a founding member of CA-03 (eventually XO), and deployed to a couple of national responses.

Yes, the hurricane drill was in SXM, carried out in the abandoned buildings of Mullet Bay Beach Resort, which was all but flattened in the hurricane of 1995, and hasn't been rebuilt.
Included were the Dutch Royal Navy, 300 Antillean Marines, and about a dozen or so US Coast Guard who were catching a ride with the Dutchmen (they apparently use them for drug interdiction in international waters). It was alot of fun watching all those military men beating the crap out of each other for the sheer fun of it. lol I know the ladies certainly enjoyed it.

NJ DMAT-1, physician. I only wish I had more time to play. Maybe after June when my resident days are done! I'm a newer member, haven't yet deployed, but had lots of fun with drills.
TRMedic: Um, yeah - 1995 was a bad year. I thought my med school days were over for good! Somehow, I keep returning to that volcano though....
