Hi all,
For those that are currently in your 2nd year, can you please help me? I'm looking to buy a dissection kit before I go to St. Kitts to save me some $$$. Can you tell me what sizes are the scapels, and what sizes of the 100 blades? And how many pieces in that dissection kit that the school bookstore sells to you guys?
thanks,
albert
I diden't know the answer to this nquestion but I sent albertcpham a PM with an email address where he can find out. Perhaps he'll share that info with everyone once he learns it...unless one of our current students post first.

I believe there are 2 flavors of scalpel, one with a "3" on it, and one with a "4"
.... suzan is telling me that the "3" might be a "7", sooo if there isn't a 3, it's a 7 lol
Blades come in "11" (for the 3/7 blade) and "22" (for the 4 blade)
I don't remember how many pieces there were in that kit...
-Probe
-3 scalpel
-4 scalpel
-blades
-Big scissor
-Little scissor
-Big forceps
-Little forceps
-Magnifying glass (useless)
-Pin w/ blue handle (useless)
That's all I remember. tbh, I didn't even use all of that. I made it through the entire semester with one 4 scalpel and one big forceps. No one is supposed to know that though : )

hey,
thank you very much for your answer. I have another question though. On the booklist from UMHS, another requirement beside the dissection kit is the 100 blades, are they all 11 and 22? Did you use those 100 blades at all?
Thanks,
Albert

Albert, the school provided all the blades we needed during the lab sessions.
BTW, you might consider assembling your own dissection kit, both to save money and end-up with more useful tools. The school-offered set has more items you don't need than useful ones--the forceps are particularly crappy. What you really need is:
#3 and #4 scalpel handles, 2 or 3 REALLY GOOD forceps (one fine, one medium and perhaps one skin forceps with a tooth at the end), a couple of good-quality dissecting scissors (medium and fine) and a good probe or two (with a fine round end and a wide flat end). A hemostat or two can be helpful but are not absolutely necessary. If you have access to a medical supply store, you can choose instruments that fit your hands and budget.
Your physician or dentist might be willing to part with some of their older instruments, if you have a close rapport with any of them.
Best of luck and see you in September.

100 blades go quite quickly in the lab, esp when you're hacking at some big organ or some fibrosed thing that reminds you of cutting into a rock. But, like what OlderGuy has said, the school provided me w/ all the blades I can ruin lol. But if you don't want to depend on the school for blades, go ahead and order your own. As far as I'm guessing, it's probli 50/50 in terms of 11s and 22s

Thank you very much for your answer. What semester are you in? I wonder if we need the medical bag and a box of gloves?

Gloves are also provided; although if you have small hands, latex allergies or want to have better quality gloves, you should buy a few boxes of your own.

I'm in 2nd semester
Gloves, they give you a ton of, so don't worry about it.
I've only seen one guy buy the medical bag, and while it gives him a doctor-like aura, it isn't really that great for anything other than that lol
