View Full Version : EU citizen -> US residency
Hello,
Besides medical tests like USMLE, what kind of visa do i need for US residency as a EU (Latvia) citizen graduated basic 6-year studies in EU?

As an EU citizen having spent 6 years in the US doing postgraduate training, and currently struggling with big time immigration hassles, this is my advice to you: if you are given a choice between J1 visa in a good program and H1b visa in an average program, I would go with H1b. Avoid J1 at all costs if you don't want to feel like a leper at the end of your training, who belongs neither here, nor back in Europe.
That is if you want to come to the US in the first place (I know this is not what you asked, but I must say this). I would strongly advise to seriously weigh all the pros and cons, unless there is a very specific reason why you want to come here, and not just a vague idea that life is somehow better (or easier -- ha!) across the pond. Take a very close look at residents' life, and the life of physicians in practice in your specialty of interest here in the US.
