I was just going through the student handbook on the XUSOM website. Its a 2008 version but I'm assuming its still valid. Students wear uniforms? Where do I buy it? How much is it?

Yes, I spoke to admin when I visited and you have to wear a shirt with the school logo Mon-Thur. (Fri. is a free day) It can be any of the colors that are at school store, but white polo shirt is mostly used. The are abt. $30 a shirt. Or you can buy your own shirts and have the logo sewed in, if you know someone with a logo machine.

Also, we need scrubs (green or blue) for when we go twice a week to the hospital to study the cadavers.

:D

you can buy the uniform (polo top with xavier logo) once you get to aruba, at the campus "bookstore" for about $20-30 i think; but they don't sell textbooks at the "bookstore", so buy those before coming.

uniforms you can buy when you get here from the school.

The Student Government Association (SGA) sells some shirts for cheaper...newer mroe durable quality shirts are available at the Main campus building for $25 and up I believe.

as for textbooks:

find the ISDN numbers from the online bookstore and get your books online @ amazon.com or somewhere used. they're a fraction of the price.

do this because THERE IS NO BOOKSTORE ON THE ISLAND. :D

either that or you can attempt to get your textbooks from students here, but the prices will vary from cheaper than used online...to eye-gouging expensive because ther person bought it new or overpaid for it used.

some of the books listed on the book list site are the outdated editions, generally the new editions of those texts are reccommended.

as well, bring a USB key...it'll come in very handy for getting powerpoint slides of lectures and notes from profs and fellow students ;)

HEy everyone

I've been a student here for 3 semesters.
if you're coming into the pre med program i'd say don't buy your books before you get here. it's a waste of money and all the old students will sell you theirs for like 30 - 50 a book instead of 100+

How much are the scrubs in aruba? Can I just buy them here and bring them? Are they really picky about colours?

scrubs are a bit harder to come by here, and from personal experience, tend to be a bit more expensive.

you can most likely find better quality and cheaper scrubs back home from a local uniform or medical supply store.

i would suggest you bring at least 2 sets as anatomy lab happens twice a week.

as well, the anatomy prof is particular about colour...green or blue only.

Thanks for the info! I'm assuming he isnt too picky about the shade of blue or green and I'll get them here. They are pretty cheap here...about $15 CAN for pants...
