View Full Version : Fudan University Housing

This is an offshoot of the main Fudan thread; this one is about housing specifically.
The dorms are now full - there usually isn't enough space for all the international students, but fear not - there are a lot of solutions near campus.
One popular place (but a bit expensive) is Tonghe International Student Apartments, which is located at 28 Wudong Road, right down the street from campus. I don't have their phone number, but it's pretty easy to book after you get to SH.
There are also quite a lot of apartment complexes, with cheaper ones without names, and those that are expensive such as KIC Plaza (which is just being finished right now) on Daxue Road.
If you can read Chinese, there is a good website for searching for housing online (it puts you in contact with real estate agents) - ????,???,??,??,??-???????? (http://www.kuxun.cn). However, take note that Shanghai law states that the real estate agent finder's fee for rentals is 33% of one month's rent.
When looking and comparing pricing, remember that the dorm is 2700/month for a single with private bathroom, including utilities, but not including internet. If you are sharing with someone and sharing a bathroom/living room, it is easy to find something at 2000 or significantly less. If you are looking for a single bedroom apartment or studio, 2000-2500 is probably a good price.
For the lease, see if you can sign til the middle of next July. This is when the 09-10 school year ends (Last exams are 7/10). This way, you can move to Fenglin (medical campus) at the beginning of summer vacation to settle things down.
It's always better to share an apartment, in my opinion, and even better if it is with people in your class. Perhaps there are other people out there on VMD who were also shut out of booking a room in the dorm.
I've also seen good listings on Shanghai EnjoyClassifieds: Shanghai Jobs, Personals, Property classifieds - Thursday, July 16 2009 (http://www.enjoyclassifieds.com) and craigslist: shanghai classifieds for jobs, apartments, personals, for sale, services, community, and events (http://shanghai.craigslist.com.cn). Again, for those who can read Chinese, Google µØͼ (http://ditu.google.com) (China's Google Maps), it is a convenient place to check the distance from school, and which possible bus routes are available, and even how long it takes.

hey conway you said that you have already shifted out of the campus accomodation. where do you stay? do they have any single rooms there? could you please temme the average amount in RMB for single rooms in general...
Conway

I rented an apartment on Guoding Road, at #101, but it is a bit far. There are many complexes which are occupied by Chinese couples and families, and aren't specifically designated as student housing.
For a single apartment, I think an average price would be around 2500-3000 RMB for a "foreign" standard apartment. Of course, there would probably be some that are less if you are willing to settle for less (perhaps smaller, no elevator, older, etc).

HOLY CRAP!! thats really really expensive!! :D hehehhe. i was thinking more towards 1500 RMB. i aint at all materialistic so i guess i could settle for less. so you cant really get a single room for around 200 US per month?
Conway
07-16-2009, 10:56 PM
Well, you can get it easily to ¥1500 if you share with other people - so if you can find a 2 or 3 person apartment to share, the cost goes down significantly!
amatzz
07-17-2009, 04:38 PM
ohhhh okay but then would that mean that 2-3 people would be in one room, or are you talking about an apartment with three rooms each person with his/her own room? anyways thanks alot bro. il see what i can get when i come there. hope to see you soon then mate!
Conway
07-17-2009, 08:26 PM
Nope - each person would still have their own room - it would be a 2 or 3 bedroom apartment, with a living room, kitchen, 1-2 bathrooms, etc.

At the Foreign Students Dorm at Handan campus you mentioned earlier that we have to pay for internet, correct? Do you remember how much it was and for how much time? Please let me know. Thanks!
Conway

I'm not sure - I just remember it being in increments of 25, 30, and 100 yuan, at either 512K or 1M speeds. It was counted by the minute, and a 30 yuan card could last a few weeks, if you're not on constantly (School's intranet can be accessed for free - with free movies, shows, email, school resources, etc)
Thank god I booked the room on time. Listen, I have booked it for 28th so does that mean I have to be there on 28th or can I also come a day earlier or late?

@ozy - I don't think you HAVE to go that day although it's preferred. I think the pamphlets/website said within three days after your booked date, but not earlier. Although, I called in and said I might be a bit late (as in more than 3 days) and they okayed it, albeit with much reluctance. I would just call in to double check if you're going later/earlier.
The number I called is 86-21-6564-3407. I'm not entirely sure if they speak English, though.

HI everyone!!!
I also got accepted into the 2009 batch of MBBS this year. I also booked my moving in date to be the Aug 28th. From the website/booklet, i think u can delay ur moving in date if u can't make it up within the 3 days time-frame. Just give them a call or fax them a written notice. Which floor did u guys had?? i had mine on the 19th floor!!! Looking forward to see u guys soon....

Hi Conway:
Actually i have a few questions regarding to International Dorm at the Handan campus. For the bathroom, does it contain a bath tub or just standing-shower??? Also what's the measurement of the bed linen, is it 1.2m X 1m for the single bed??? Furthermore, i heard that we can rent a small fridge inside the room, do u know how big the rental fridge is??? and do they have many to be available??? Oh ya, how's the internet work??? charge by how much the usage it is???
Thx for you reply!!!

I was on the 19th floor too! Rooms with an even number have a nice view of the skyline.
The bathroom has a bath rub. I'm not sure of the bed linen measurements - it's a small single bed, a little smaller than an american twin-sized bed. You can rent a fridge. One of my classmates did that, but more actually just bought one from Walmart. I'm not sure which is a better deal, so you could probably look around. The rental fridges are about the size of a college dorm size fridge; I'm not sure how many they have available.
Internet is charged by the minute, and you buy cards downstairs from China Unicom. I think this was mentioned somewhere else. I think what we really need is our own forum, with so many different questions :P

I don't know about ozy, but I booked it RIGHT at 9am on July 15th. I think that's the key.
I was also wondering...what is the electrical outlet like in the foreign student dorms? I'm just wondering whether I should be investing in some adaptors.

Hey onlei
I'm also on the 19th floor, looking forward to meet you. My room number is 1915, sadly its an odd number. What about you?
ozy
Oh, and I booked it about 5-6 hours late when the booking opened and I only had a choice between 14 rooms or something like that. Seemes like everyone was in a rush. :)

Room 1915 may face north, but it's a nice room! My current housemate was in that room, and it used to be a double, making it an extra large room, and one of the few rooms with a sliding door to the balcony.

Even though I logged in right on time, the top 3 floors were still mostly booked (even numbers, that is). I still only got 20th. So I don't think it made a huge difference. You all got great rooms anyhow :)
Conway, do you remember anything about the electrical outlets? Do I need an adaptor (I use N. American outlets)? Thanks!
Looking forward to meeting you all.

I think u better invest some $$ onto the adaptors, cuz China uses a different type of outlets than the North America does. U can buy those travel adaptors from Shanghai's local store. Not too expensive!!! But as i said, u will need it for charging ur taplop or other electrical stuff.

hi guys,
i am about to fly to shanghai for some clinical rotation. the university found us a room in a dorm at dong an road 130 but also told us that they are out of office due to a national holiday.
since i do not speak any chinese i am a littel worried that i might be very lost during the first days. is by chance anyone of you going to be there by any chance? i would be very happy for any kind of help since the information i got so far is rather limited.
cheers

if you can't speak any chinese just stay in your room unless you find someone to show you around. there's nothing interesting to see around that address. if you have some pocket money (say 50-100 us dollar), you can call a taxi on roadside and tell the driver, word by word clearly, 'wo yao qu xu jia hui' which means i'd like to travel to xujiahui. it is a business center only a few blocks away from your place of living with lots of malls and restaurants. pls don't go any farther otherwise you will really get lost in shanghai.
yeah, just image google 'xujiahui'. it's not bad.

alternatively, if you don't mind, just email me your name and flight number, if there will be no one to pick you up at the airport which is really far away from dong an road. probably i can find someone to take you to your room and show you around. it's up to you.
