If one was to stay in Mexico to do the Internado year, could this be done in hospitals closer to the border such as Tijuana?

I think this is going to be a very important topic of discussion over the next year or so as we transition to the new 5th year program. The most important question will be whether we need to make that trip to New York and spend all that money to do the 5th year, or whether we can stay in Mexico and do the 5th year for far far less money.

I have heard that the year in New York costs upwards of $40K in tuition alone, and that the internship year in Mexico would be a fraction of that cost, perhaps less than $4K. For that kind of a price difference, I think the majority of students would be compelled to stay in Mexico for the 5th year, even if they hated Mexico. Additionally, there used to be a deal where the State of New York would grant an honorary M.D. degree to students who finish the Fifth Pathway. I don't believe that offer still stands with the new 5th year program. Therefore, the only benefit of going to New York would be to work in US hospitals and get letters of recommendation from American doctors. I think every student needs to decide for himself/herself if that kind of experience and networking is worth the cost associated with it.

When i last talked to my admissions counselor in san antonio, she was telling me that they were diligently working on having other options for doing the 5th year in other states including Texas. Hopefully within a few years, other state options will be made official. Also, hopefully they will be cheaper than the New York program, although i'm sure Mexico will still remain the most economical option. Being from houston, i would def love to do the 5th year in Texas...If one is able to do the 4th year in the states, and get the rec letters, then doing the 5th year in Mexico would seem like a great choice.
