Student Visa for Canadians??

We have a lot of Canadians @ MUA but all the rotations are in the US. According to following site, I am pasting below - it mentions if you have any coursework requiring longer than 18hours per week, one is eligible for F1 student visa. Could any canadian confirm this???

The reason I ask is because, rotations will be almost 2 years in the US and I feel that purchasing a vehicle which could be registered in US + building credit in US would be really beneficial in the long run. For both, I would need a social security# which can only be obtained with a Visa.
I would appreciate if any current canadian students can confirm, what the process is like and if they are on a Student visa.

Only a US school can issue the proper paperwork so that you can apply for an F1 visa. Since you are attending a foreign school and will be doing unpaid training at a hospital, and F1 is not the right visa for you. That said, sometimes they will issue you an F1 visa by mistake...

you will not be eligible for an F1 visa because MUA-N is not an American registered university. The only visa that you will be eligible for as a Canadian doing clinicals in the US is a B1 visa. Your clinical education department should be able to help you out with the visa letter of support for the B1. SSNs are harder to come by now, you won't be able to obtain one on a B1, you will be able to get one when you apply for residency in the US on a J1 or H1B.
