-From the AUC site: (http://www.aucmed.edu/premed-advisors/student-profile.html)
Average Cumulative GPA: 3.2
Average Science GPA: 3.1
Average MCAT: 25
It is best not to think about minimum GPA, etc., just do your best.

Jan 2010 already? Well congrats to those who have already heard! Before you go getting any ideas, try to enjoy the remaining time before med school starts. It may seem like it's forever away, but it comes fast. And once it does, it doesn't stop often, or for very long.

Good luck everyone!
and I agree... don't try to pre-study... just relax, no amount of preparation will prepare you for the torrent of information that awaits you... (muwahha..ha..haha?)
Rfisher

I agree with both of them as well. As much as you may want to study (and I did too) do not study. As has been said before, it is a waste of your time. Do anything unrelated to studying that you can do. You will get enough studying when you get here.
Good luck everyone! I so hope I start in Jan 2010. All the support and positivity is awesome! We're going to be a great class! Hoo-rah!
As soon as I hear the good news from AUC, I'm going to get as much Halo 3 in as much as possible, maybe until I burn my xbox out. What else is everyone planning to do before the grind starts?

I'm not an expert but when I applied they told me I automatically got into the May 2009 class (this was in late March.. which was way too fast for me) or be on wait list (for 3 months!) and hope to get Sept 2009. I chose wait list and thankfully everything worked out. My stats weren't so good as well.
So to answer planly.. for me it was a lot easier to get into May class (I think they need to fill up the class since less people apply). I would apply whenever you have all the info you need... doesn't hurt.

I have a question. I am planning on going ether to AUC for MD or going to National University of Health Science for a dual DC ND degree.
I have an unrelenting desire to become a doctor, but don’t want to spend $250k and have no way to pay it back (if I don’t get a residency). According to the ECFMG only 50% of IMG (that are certified by the ECFMG) obtain residency placement.
Should I take the risk, or should I just get my ND and practice in WA or AZ.
Please no DC ND bashing. (NUHS is the concidered the best DC school, and does not preach subluxation mumbo, only science/evidenced based medicine and practice)

Wow... maybe you're just trolling... but I'll bite anyhow. To me, HUGE differences in MD vs. DC ND--Subluxation or not, I don't think there's any comparison. Perhaps you ought to shoot for a DO... there's a new DO school in Washington and there are two in Arizona. At least then you'd be a legitimate physician.
Also, you should be concerned with how many AUC graduates obtain residency spots... not all IMGs.

I don't think DC/ND can prescribe medications? Even in AZ?
If you can't get into a US MD program, then go for a US DO program... if you don't want to be a DO then go to a Caribbean MD program. AUC's match rate was something around 85% last year. That is including scramble and pre-matches... but only the ones people reported. I'm sure many people got placements that didn't report to the school.

I looked extensively into ND schools and practice as it interests me. One of the drawbacks of the ND is that most cannot repay their student loans. Then there is the limited number of states in which you are licensed to practice as well as the lack of a required residency. The ND program may suit you but beware of the challenges you will be up against, many more than the AUC grad.

I did not mean to come off as trolling. I have no other agenda then to make the best and most informed decision I can.
That being said, ND's in Arizona can Rx they are just restricted to legend drugs, even some scheduled II, and III drugs. And can perform minor surgery.
But you’re right in the sense that ND's do have a hard time paying off loans. They are also not readily accepted by the medical community.
I did apply to a handful of DO schools last year, and even got an interview. Unfortunately I unknowingly applied to the most competitive DO schools, and did not get in.
Are those #’s correct 85% match rate. If so I think my mind is made up then (where can I find that information? so that I may show my mentors and advisors). If all goes well I will see you in January. Thanks again

Are you sure that is the case? Since the AUC basic science is completed in 20 months versus 24 at a typical school, clinical rotations start at about the same time. I can see it being an issue for May starting class though.

If the planets and moons align and you are lucky and you pass everything on the first shot and you take no breaks then with a Jan 2010 start date you might make it to the 2013 match. But it is not likely (run a search for more info, it has been discussed alot). You will more likely match in 2014. But if you start in Sept. 2009, then you will most likely make the 2013 match. So 4 months can make a year of a difference. Therefore, if they offer you September and you can get yourself together in the next month go for it! Otherwise just plan to match in 2014 and don't kill yourself trying to make the 2013 match. :bestwishes:

I am making the call in the morning to accept the early in, as long as it is still available. I have more support here than I realized and they are going to help me dot the I's and cross the T's. Just got a few things to work out for the Rock.
Got a suggestion for a location for a 1 BR within walking distance? Is there anything I want to avoid?
BTW, are you down there or back here?

I'm down here. Check out some of the threads, there are quite a few 1 BR's here from $1000-$1800 depending on your preferences. Anything located in Cupecoy is within walking distance. I haven't dealt with them myself, but the word is avoid Solutions if you can.

Does anybody know what ADDITIONAL LOAN PROGRAMS (in addition to the Stafford Loan) are available at AUC? Do they require a credit-worthy cosigner?
Thanks for your helpful input.

I got Grad/PLUS loan in addition to the Stafford. This is federal money also. I did not need a cosigner but some people do apparently. Do your FAFSA now even if you don't know where you are going or how you are going to pay for it.

Traditionally, the May/Jan classes are easier to get in to. This has alot to do with the fact that most colleges traditionally end in May/April and most students apply for the Sept class in the states and offshore. Although the class size is bigger, there are also more applications, so it's a numbers game.
But there are plenty of smart May students. :)

Hi everyone,
I'm in for January 2010 too! I was wondering what everyone is planning on doing before then, ie volunteering, working? Would it be beneficial to try to shadow doctors? my experience was that if they reject you.. they reject you for all. But, if you are a good candidate then they would "recommend" that you move your application to another period. They are very helpful and have open communication. Just talk to the admission's advisor you are assigned to you... they will answer any questions.

Just call/email your admissions advisor for the password. And make sure when you get the housing application, fill it out and return it right away, the dorm fills very quickly.

First semester finals "should" take place on the monday of that finals week. Things may change, but that is usually how it works. Unfortunately, the school has not yet released the schedule for next semester, so we cannot tell you for sure.:noidea: As soon as we find out, I will post the date to this forum if it is not posted by someone else first. Is it true that there is a Bank of America ATM by the AUC campus? Is opening a Bank of America account the best way to handle the money situation on the island? The ATM is from ScotiaBank but there are no fees from BofA to use this ATM (or any ScotiaBank ATM) as long as you get US dollars, not "local" currency. You can use US dollars everywhere.
I use Skype to call back to the US and I have a local "chippie" cell phone, but I don't use it much. You can forward your Skype phone to your chippie phone for just a few cents per minute. The chippie phones have free incoming calls but Skype has a small per minute charge to forward the call. Truth is, you just aren't attached to a phone via umbilical cord here like you are "back home".
First semester classes are 8-920 for MCBI, 930-1020 for anatomy lecture, 1030-1120 for histology, 2-4 for anatomy lab. Histology was done for the semester on Nov 2nd. There are 3 lab groups, A, B, and C. On day one, groups A and B have "wet lab" and group C is in "dry lab". On day two, group B and C have wet lab and A is in dry lab. On day three, group C and A have wet lab and B is in dry lab. So basically you go to lab 2 days, and then off 1 day. MOST weeks, there is no lab on Friday for anyone. There is no attendance taken at dry lab, so most people don't go and they consider it "time off" but do study at home or in the library and on occasion they actually show up to dry lab. Dry lab is the virtual dissector computer program, models, and radiology.
Hope that helps.

Everything is in US dollars. Some businesses on the French side (mainly the street vendors) will give you $1 for 1 Euro, which is pretty good. But, everyone uses dollars and most places have prices listed in both currencies. I haven't met anyone here who actually uses local currency for anything.
I use Skype on the computer at home and I have a VOIP/wi-fi phone when I am at school. You can use it with a router at home too. You use an on-line number (US phone number) for people to call you and a Skype to-go number (international number, I think) that you forward to your local "chippie" cell phone. I bought a cell phone from Amazon because my phone from Alltel would not work here. I think AT&T/Cingular and T-Mobile phones work here. I got one that was called "international version" (it says T-Mobile on the phone itself). It uses the local "chippie card" which is a card that has your phone number and account info encoded on it. A chippie card is about $25 new and you can get a used one for a good deal too. The cell phones they actually sell here are pretty crappy though, but not cheap (cost-wise). Mine took a small tumble on the floor and was toast. All incoming calls on chippie are free, but you use Skype credit (or an unlimited plan) to forward your on-line number to a to-go number, which is a few cents per minute. You can call direct from a chippie phone to the US but I think it is about 50 cents a minute or more. The chippie phones use prepaid minutes sold in $10 increments and the minutes are good for 60 days, use it or lose it. Hope that helps.

Not sure if anyone's posted this here, but in case you haven't heard from your Orientation Advisor, we also have a facebook group for your incoming class...

I was wondering if anyone had received their temporary residency permit? Does MEAS mail it to us?

Nope, you pick up your temporary residence permit when you get here from the police station. You'll get an email about it. It will likely not be ready your first semester. My class had theirs ready our second semester, but I've also heard of people who don't get them before they leave here. LOL

Hi! Just wondering if anyone knows what size the beds are in the apartments off campus? Are they twin or full? I know on campus we have twin size beds. Thanks.

Hey guys, the final exam schedule has been release for next semester and the only final exam that you have on finals week is on Tuesday, April 20th at 8 AM. You should be able to book your flights home on/after April 21st.

Can all semesters leave the 21st?

Yup. The 20th is the last day of finals. Unless some unforeseen event makes AUC postpone finals, we should all be done the 20th. The Anatomy and Biochem Shelves are on Monday the 19th.

I made this map for the last 1st semester class, but it is of helpful locations in simpson bay/ cole bay area. If you have any questions about them, ask away. Also I wanted to introduce myself to anyone who will be living in the dorms. I am Matt, one of the 3 RAs. I will be arriving of the 4th and am in room 304, feel free to stop by or message me with any questions.

The school is off the map, it is pretty easy to get to from the airport. Here is a video from 2 semesters ago, it is a little bit different due to construction but still easy. YouTube- sxm to AUC

If you are planning to rent an apartment
off campus, you might want to consider
signing a ONE semester lease, instead
of a ONE year lease. Always know how
to negotiate with your potential landlord.
If a landlord tells you that nothing
can be changed on the lease, you'd better go to
the next landlord. You are advised to
come down here to inspect rental apartments
in person. Try to ask around folks in upper
classes for their opinions.
