I am currently working as a Geriatric Nurse and I have been accepted to the St. James Medical School. With this economy crisis, I am not too thrilled to use all my savings to pay for med school therefore I am considering US osteopathic medicine schools instead. Is anyone currently enrolled at either TOUROCOM or NYCOM? I'll greatly appreciate any insights about the curriculum and the schedule hours.
I am a 30 year old single nurse, hoping to start a family within a year or two, that's another reason I would prefer a US based school. At least I'll have family support if I do leave single life:p.
GOD IS GOOD ALL THE TIME AND ALL THE TIME GOD IS GOOD
May God Bless you in your studies

I was a student at DO school once upon a time, and I have some friends who attended NYCOM. It is the older of the two schools, and as such has a longer track record. IMHO, you cannot go wrong with either choice. My personal preference would be for NYCOM, but I wouldn't turn my nose up at either one. Good luck to you!

I would recommend NYCOM over Touro. I was accepted into a 7 year B.S./DO program with NYCOM (but transferred out of the hosting college). I've also shadowed a doc who was a clinical instructor for NYCOM students and he was very impressed with the quality of students from the school.
I interviewed at LECOM Bradenton a few months ago and was very impressed with their curriculum (PBL based). They are a newer school (opened in 2004) but so far, their track record is impressive. The campus is in Florida though, so that might be out of the question for you.
Another thing: have you shadowed a DO? There are a couple of DO schools that require a letter of reccomendation from a DO (I think Touro might be one).
Good luck with your decision!
and a quick disclaimer: I am not a DO student, nor will I attend a DO school this fall :)

I'd look at NYCOM because of the hospital affiliations and NYCOMEC affiliated residencies. If you could bare to move a little, look at PCOM and UMDNJ-SOM. I would be careful thinking about starting a family at the beginning of medical school. The best time for students to have children seems to be between 3rd and 4th year (as per a few friends). Getting through basic sciences and Step 1 COMLEX (USMLE too, if you choose to do so) is hard, so get thru that first (I don't want to be a spoil sport, but people who have been there before seem to agree).
Good luck.

Tx guys for your input, I do prefer NYCOM over TOUROCOM; but since TOUROCOM is about 45 mins or so from CT I figure I would not need to move. I'll contintinue to look at other schools around NY-NJ-CT.
Until next time:cool:

TOUROCOM also has a location in NY,, i would look at both schools, TOUROCOM NY had one of the harshest interviews i ever attended as a pre-med, i felt like i was being questioned by the NYPD, also the campus is much better at NYCOM and its located in the subs vs the inner city, these may also play a role in your decision
