School Closing

in a worst case scenario lets say a school closes down...how does that affect someone doing:



residency

or someone applying for a new license in a different state...?????

If the state uses only the IMED information for credentialling, then as long as your graduation year is listed in IMED then you'll be ok (as long as you have graduated) Its a little more complex than that and the problem is that when applying for a license, the state boards often require information FROM your medical school registrar (transcripts, school seal stamps, graduation certifications, etc). If it is not functioning then there's no way to get it.

You just have to look into what your state's requirements are.

You should use the FCVS for primary education source documentation. This will alleviate the need for the school to verify any documents going forward. This was the primary reason the FCVS was create as part of the Federation of State Medical Boards.
"The Federation Credentials Verification Service (FCVS) was established in 1996 to provide a centralized, uniform process for state medical boards as well as private and governmental entities to obtain a verified, primary source record of a physician's core medical credentials."

Not all states use FCVS. Also where do you think the FCVS gets its credentials to distribute to state medical boards? From the medical school.

Also keep in mind that FCVS will be useful for your Full license, however you still need to apply for a resident training license, and most states do not use FCVS for the resident license.

I was assuming a full licensure scenario. FCVS verifies the original documentation with the school. FCVS does not go back to the school everytime a request is made for verification by a board or other body so if a school closes, this becomes the permanent record for the member. This is also helpful if a person's residency program closes. Not all states accept this but a large number do so it is better than not doing anything at all.
If the school is closing before you have started residency or even in the match, you will be in trouble along with all existing students.
