Hey,
I have been thinking about attending medical school abroad, but I've been talkign with my friends whose parents are doctors here, but educated in their home countries. They stay that they have to retake their board exams every few years, even after they're practicing physicians. (This in in New York State). What's the deal here?

It has nothing to do with being IMG's.
Most specialty boards nowadays require recertification in intervals of 10 years. I can't speak for other boards, but internal medicine and its subspecialty boards now require re-certification every 10 years in order to keep the "board certified" status. This is regardless of where one goes to medical school and has absolutely nothing to do with being IMG's.

you dont retake the usmles or any qualifying boards to be an md. you do have to recert in your speciality but this is for any doc not just imGs.
