Hi!

I am an English student looking to study medicine in Europe.

Can any one comment on these questions in relation to courses taught in English at Masaryk University, Brno, in the Czech Republic or Comenius University, Slovakia
(please say which one).

How good are the lecturers?
Are they easy to understand?
How good is the library?
How good is the IT?
What size are the classes?
How many British students enroll each year?
What are the halls of residence like?
What’s it like overall?

Thanks!

Jonno :D

I notice there was a Canadian woman here who used to comment a bit about Comenius, but it doesn't seem there are any recent posts regarding this school. If anyone is studying there, a quick little, 'hey, things are cool here or life sucks, we're all transferring out' would be appreciated.

Peacefuljourney was the Canadian woman who attended Comenius in Slovakia. She and her husband have both graduated, though, and I believe they are back in North America. I would have liked to have found out about Comenius earlier, I might have considered going there, myself!

Do a search for "peacefuljourney" here on VMD and I am sure that you will find lots of information.

How good are the lecturers?

It some are good some are bad, just like any other university.

Are they easy to understand?

Yes most of the time. They are all in English

How good is the library?

Yes very good, they build a new one on Vervzi (sp?) street.

How good is the IT?

They have the best IT department of all the medical school the Czech Republic.

What size are the classes?

This depends, the first year you will have a huge class, second year it will be around 25% smaller and by 3rd year at least half the students would have failed, quit or moved to Slovakia/Romania/Bulgaria because they could not hack it in a Czech medical school.

we started with 130 student in my year. We now have 40!

How many British students enroll each year?

Quite a few

What are the halls of residence like?

Rent a nice flat, I was not a fan of halls but its down to you.

What’s it like overall?

Put it this way, if you are willing to work VERY VERY hard you will be fine. It gets much easier after the 3rd year just keep at it for the first 3 years and you will be able to relax a little in your 4th and 5th year.

Dont be fooled into thinking you will be able to pay your way through, if you do not study you will fail and they will kick you out!

Good luck.

Hey, is it harder than being in high school/sixth form?

Why do people fail? Are they just the ones that party rather than revise?

How hard is it to pass your exams? I am a borderline A/B student. Will i struggle?
How fast paced is it?

Thanks

Hey, is it harder than being in high school/sixth form?

Yes, but any good University will be harder then school/sixth form. That is just part of growing up.

Why do people fail? Are they just the ones that party rather than revise?

A combination of reasons, some of them should have never come to medical school because they are simply not capable.
Some have never been away form home and can't cope.
Some just party too much, don't get me wrong I like to have fun but I also know when its time to get my *** down and do some work.
Some of the students are smart but just do not have the will or discipline to do the work required.
Some of the students never wanted to be doctors but mummy and daddy told them they have to go to medical school (mostly Indians).
The list just goes one.

How hard is it to pass your exams?
Most exams are not too bad if you work hard, both the first and second year will have one or 2 really hard exams to filer out the students.

I am a borderline A/B student. Will i struggle?
Its really hard to say form your A-Levels, I was a C's students and have done very well. I know people that have all A's and have struggled.
If you think you are a strong enough person to motivate your self to work hard and not feel sorry for your self at every opportunity you will be just fine.

How fast paced is it?
6 years plus.
