Hi,
I was just wondering if someone could estimate my chances of medical school are. I'm a senior majoring in philosophy and I have a 2.5 GPA. I was thinking of stayimg an extra year and retaking all the classes I've failed. I would also try my best to ace the MCAT. It has always been my dream to be a doctor. What should I do?
Thanks

Most likely if you do well in your retakes & MCAT - you have a chance at some of the lessor island medical schools. Keep working.

Caribbeans.... no problem....

US... problem... unless you do master program like in biomedical sciences (with good GPA and MCAT)

Let me rephrase that: Caribbean? No problem if you're not picky at all about which one.

US: You'd better get a 4.0 in some advanced science degree with numerous publications, fabulous LORs, know people on the admission committee, etc.

Thanks! What if I apply for the six year programs at the Eastern/Central European Schools? Are my chances there any different than Caribbean?

I don't know anything about European schools but I recommend that you stick with Caribbeans.... My main reason is becuase clinical rotation will be in US and you need that time to make connections, LOR, etc.

Depends on what you want really. At this stage I would do everything I could to at least get a seat at one of the Big 3 Caribbean schools (Ross, AUC, SGU), or Saba. Meander over to the Residency forum section here on ValueMD and read the ongoing discussions on Match trends and you'll realize why.

Is Obama your dad ?

Then, you might have a chance to get into a U.S medical school.
