The Philippine school I am attending is currently working on getting us some foreign clerkships for 4th year - australia, thailand, and california are on the list of possibilities. I am wondering:
1) Since Ill be an IMG, do I care if the california rotation is green book or not? Will it affect my eligibility for residency training in any way?
2) What about clerkships in countries OUTSIDE of the Philippines that are not in the US? Will it be a problem for me to have those credited in the US when I come back?
3) Do I need to have the USMLE completed before I can apply for clerkships in the US on my own (I heard of some US students before me who arranged them on their own)?

Thanks.

Just wondering which school are you studying in? Clerkships in these countries sounds like good opportunities for International Students in the Philippines

sounds like a bit of rehearsed advertising above... How about an objective assessment of 1) Whether non-US clerkships outside of my program in the Philippines will help or hurt my residency application in the US, and 2) Whether or not I should care if my US clerkship is "greenbook" or not.

I'm from caifornia currently attending med school in Manila. If your goal is to obtain a license in Cali after residency make sure that your core rotation that you will be doing in the USA is in a greenbook (ACMG-accredited) program. PM me so i can email you the response from Cali board that I got lately. Nowadays, most of the program requires step 1 whether your school is affiliated to them or not. In my school we are now required to take step 1 before clerkship. My school has institutionalized clerkship program in US hospitals though. I suggest do your own research. Remember that school tend to make promises and hopes to attract and keep students. Whether I addressed your questions or not good luck to you my friend.

So only Core US clerkships need to be greenbook, not electives? Also, My second question remains unanswered - will it be a problem for licensing if I accept clerkships abroad outside of Philippines that are NOT in USA? For example, my school has "institutionalized" rotations in California, but also in Thailand and Australia. I want to make sure I can go to the former 2 without jeopardizing my future. I also need to double check if the Cali rotation is greenbook, as per your advice.
