J1 Research visa

I am from pakistan. ive been offered a research from a US hospital. they r offering me a J1 visa. i have a query about the waiver program. i mean my ultimate goal is residency. and is it possible to get my Research based j1 visa to be changed to a clinical J1 visa after a year or so if i happen to get a residency???

Yes, there won't be a problem. Usually J1 research visas are sponsored by US hospitals. A Clinical J1 for a residency program is sponsored by the ECFMG not the residency program. Only the J1 visas, sponsored by the ECFMG, require the applicant to leave the US for 2 years (unless you have a waiver). Any other type of J1 visa can be renewed unless you don't have an sponsor.
