I hope to get a residency in Louisiana as I plan to practice there when I'm done. I found the following as part of the criteria in getting licensed in LA.

"Applicant must have completed three years of ACGME approved residency training in the United States or Canada in the same specialty"

So I assume I can't get licensed in LA without first completing 3 years of residency. And am I safe to assume you can't moonlight until you're licensed? I was really counting on making extra money during my 2nd and 3rd years of residency, so I hope my thinking is wrong on this.

You may not be able to apply for a permanent MD license in LA w/o completing 3 years of ACGME residency, BUT you can still do residency there if a program takes you.

But you won't be able to moonlight w/o a permanent license. Sorry.

actually may not be true..if your hospital has IN house moonlighting then you will be able to do that, but it has some stipulations, the biggest of which is that the hours you moonlight will count toward your 80 hour wokr week and you will probably get paid less than you would with other types of moonlighting...

out of hospital moonlighting will require you to have your own full license, not a training license.

You'll need a permanent license to moonlight no matter where you are because you're functioning as an independent healthcare provider and you're not under supervision of another attending. Yes, you may get paid less because you're still in training. And yes, your hours go toward the 80 hours.

I disagree. I was trainned in the state that not allow FMG moonlight until they got real license, not training license, but my hospital has in-house moonlight, I got pay less but I moonlight in my 2nd and 3rd year. As long as you pass step III, they let you moonlight in house.
