Hello, I am new to this forum. I am a U.S. citizen and have an undergraduate degree. I have MCAT score of 28. I came to India because I couldn't get admission in US and I really wanted to become a doctor. I came to Bombay because my relatives (from my father's side) live here and they are supposedly very close to my father as long as they get money and other items from him. First my uncle (my father's brother) insisted I live with him and his family (one wife, two daughters, and a son) though they live hour and half away from the medical college I was suppose to go. My aunt (uncle's wife) started taunting me and her children (my cousins) started ridiculing me for everything. On the top of it I got sick with diarrihea and vomiting plus strep throat. Although my mother was with me she couldn't do anything for me because my aunt is very territorial and my mother is a pushover. My aunt made us leave her house then we went to my other aunt (my father's sister). My mother didn't like their behavior so she found a dorm for me and left for US within 15 days. But there was no mess in the hostel and water and power used be off for 3 days at a time. I became so sick that I needed hospitalization and even after I got ok I used to have diarrhea as soon as I ate outside food and yes there was no other choice. My father told me to go to my aunt's because he is the one who bought the apt. for her. She and her children were verbally abusing me and finally kicked me out of the apt. My mother decided to come back and rent an apt and now we are living in that but my father was visiting us last month and aunt would come every single day that made me agitated. This makes me feel like going back to US. I would like to transfer to US but I don't know how. The reason I have written my whole life story so that you will understand how bad it is. Please help.

There's an NRI forum on student doctor network, they might be able to help you more. Most people on this site go to Europe/Caribbean for medicine.

okay well its interesting because you and me are somewhat in the same situation. we both go to india for medical school and we dislike it granted that i have learned to get used to it. well awhile ago when i wanted to really leave this place i found all the medical schools in america that might be willing to transfer me to there school. i had many replies and they were a no! a school in rochester,ny said if there was 3rd year openings then maybe but i dont believe it because indian school are not part of the legion of schools in usa and canada so a person not affiliated with the legion can not be accepted. secondly we hold no bachelor's degree so we dont meet a requirement well maybe you do? but anyway yea it wont happen i am sorry i really tried my best.

okay so now here's what you do. im in hyderabad and its pretty nice here so i dont have a problem with living and eating. i have my own place with a maid and a driver. i live in a nice apartment and when i go out to eat i eat at nice places. i have family here but they did complete shit for me and i said screw that i am going to be on my own. thats what you need to do! forget everyone and think about yourself. now find a nice place. find a maid/cook and if you dont have a car get one with a driver. it will solve a lot of stress. dont worry about the cost cause trust me the amount i paid for school in hyderabad is about twice the amount u paid for mumbai i payed 72 lacks equivalent to 172,000 not including living here. but in the end its all worth it cause when im a doctor i will be able to pay my parents back in a year or two. so live well in india pretty much okay and dont worry about the shit thats here. yes you will get sick from outside food that means eat at nice clean places. most importantly i hope you have friends cause you will need them cause it gets lonely and i dont have many but it defintely helps. alright if you need anything let me know. what year are you?

That sounds really tough, it's quite unbelievable how ungrateful people can be. You could perhaps try transferring to a Caribbean school, the living aspect of things will be a lot less depressing.

I totally agree about how much it sucks. I am attending a well known NRI medical school in India and I am having some serious issues. I just want to transfer into a program that will give me more clinical US experience, a program that is WITHIN the university. But the administration here is not even letting me transfer programs without ask me to paying for the remainder of my MBBS course in the current program. Does that make sense? I am not leaving, just changing programs after all!! I know colleges are businesses but they are also supposed to be educational facilities not prison. They aren’t suppose to try to keep their students trapped. I know this is India but if a school claims to be a rising star in education it should act like one. Asking for money because they are losing a "seat" to me shows the schools true colors. Come on even in the business sense, you have not rendered me the service yet you are asking for money. I don’t know any colleges in US where they will charge their students extra for withdrawing (forget transferring). Being unable to leave makes you also feel depressed, trapped and unable to study. Though I am doubtful, I am trying to work with higher administration members to let me transfer. But anyway sorry for the ramble, but I am hoping that even if one student reads this and follows this advice:
“if your an NRI or foreign graduate DON’T come to India unless it is your very very very very last option. Don’t come thinking it will help you get back to your roots, better clinical experience, help you stay focused etc. You can work on all that after you get your medical degree for some where else. Caribbeans are to me 100% better choice looking back. I made one mistake and am now paying for it dearly.”
Then this post was worth it. I will also post if I am completely wrong and my college and its administration actually understands my situation and helps me out.

alright well i'll tell you why you have to pay for the whole education and you can't transfer out without paying all of it. well in india there is no such thing as trasnferring people can go from one college to another and if someone leaves then that medical seat is empty and they would lose money on you. they wont do that! they have to be paid fully. fortunate for you that you can pay in installments. i had to pay all my money at once! thats right i brought $180,000 in cash to the owner of the school. i was fortunate my parents had the money but it was not easy we had to mortgage our house and so on. india is bullshit but here what you get out of it. you get an mbbs degree which suprisingly means a lot. if you went to the carribbean you would learn from ppl only telling you about the usmle and not about how to be a doctor. also if your a high school grad and dont have a bachelor's degree about 12 states will not give you a license because they require it. but here's the way to get out of it your not getting an md degree your getting an mbbs degree which is equivalent to a bachelors and md degree so they can say anything. because india calls mbbs as bachelors and the rest of the world as md. trust me i know this and i know ppl who have gotten licenses from states that require bachelors but the mbbs was enough. look now you can go to any state you want! thats a big advantage in a competitive field. im sorry you cant leave india, if you come you have to stay till the end. face up and do it! but im pretty sure for house surgeon ship you can come to the states. i dont know i havn't been that far yet. what school do you guys go to? im going to deccan college of medial sciences in hyderabad. but i wish i was in manipal :(

I am on this site after a long time. Thank you so much for all the supportive messages. My parents bought a house for me close to the college. I have a choice to walk to the college but these days it's raining a lot so I take an autorickshaw to and from my college. I am doing pretty well. I have a maid who cleans and cooks for me and also I have a clothes washer so no problem about having clean clothes. You won't believe I used to pay 10 rupees per garment to a wahser woman and she didn't even clean the clothes properly. I have my prilim exams in August for 2nd professional. These days I am in Medicine rotation. I have finished 2 years in the medical college and I feel like I almost half way done. I don't think I will try for the transfer becasue first I have to go through lot of hassle meaning finding a place that will accept me, getting a letter of recomendation from the dean, getting two letters of recomendation from the other teachers. I will work hard, get good grades, and try to score high in USMLE and get a residency in US my home. Thanks again for the support.
