Hey MDIN2009,
you say that it is the candidates' qualifications that secures the residency spot, but inorder for them to even apply don't they need that state to approve of their medical school? Correct me if I am wrong because I've been getting many different stories so any clarifications would be much appreciated. Thanks
I hardly ever post outside of my usual forums (SMU & UMHS), but since licensure got brought up, I thought that I would chyme in.
For starters, California is the only State that Approves/Disapproves Foreign Med Schools. The California Medical Board visits these schools, and based on their research, and observations...... they then Approve or Disapprove that School. Other State Medical Boards do not have these resources, therefore choose to adopt the California List, and follow their lead.
The rest of the State Medical Boards use the IMED List. Therefore if your school is IMED listed, as Windsor is....... then you can practice in the majority of the states.
Another misconception with "approvals" is that many IMG Med Students assume that New York and Florida approval, deals with Licensure, but in fact it has nothing to do with Licensure. Those two State approvals are Strictly for Clinical Rotations. The Florida Approval is not even managed by the Florida Medical Board, instead its managed by the Florida Department of Education. NY and FL's requirement for Licensure, is that your school must be IMED listed.
New York Approval = You can do an unlimited amount of clinical rotations in the state of NY
Without New York Approval = You can ONLY do a MAXIMUM of 12 weeks of rotations
Florida Approval = You can do an unlimited amount of clinical rotations in the state of FL
Without Florida Approval = You can't do ANY clinical rotations there.
BUT....... you can Get Licensed in those states
Texas and Nevada are case by case scenarios for IMG's.
Hope that helps clear some questions.
P.S. MDIN2009...... Love the blog man, nice work
