Im currently a third year IAU finishing up my Internal Rotation at Touro hospital. The hospital informed the school over a MONTH ago that they are no longer interested in dealing with the school. I'm not surprised by the fact the school still list TOURO on the website (http://www.iau.edu.lc/clinicals.html)and hasn't given much information regarding the issue. (if you dont believe me ask one of the three other student rotation here with me) If it was not for individuals from the Touro administration who told us what was going on we would have been in a huge deal of trouble. Imagine how you would feel if you were told that four greenbook rotations would be avaliable ( a total of 6-8months worth) then taken away. IAU shows once again how great they are in dealing with situation.

Now I currently have to move within the next three weeks with zero help from the school on the matter and revamp all my plans. Had the Touro Administration not told us when they did (the school knew earlier and said nothing because "negotations" were going on) my roommate and I would have signed a six month lease and been screwed out of a lot of money. There are other things wrong with the rotation down here like the fact that I signed up for Internal Medicine and not 4 ELECTIVES that will be counted as internal medicine due to ONCE AGAIN PISS POOR communication on IAU's part. That's all I'm saying for now

Sincerley,

An annoyed IAU student who can't transfer b/c no school's will accept IAU's credits

PS...what happend to the promise that NY is coming in the fall? Ahhhh ** as usual from the school.

I have worked at IAU for a while and have not known any body who were paid USD 1500.00. May be the person applied for a Lab assistant position or they thought the person was not worth their normaly salary and decided to offer the salary given to Lab assistants.

Official Response from the Admin.

Let me start by addressing rspr41 directly and offer my sincere support and concern for your situation. I am sure this unexpected change has been not only inconvenient for you, but stressful and frustrating as well.

Touro is a new clinical site for IAU, and while we had high hopes for a continued relationship, factors out of our control led to the decision to end the affiliation. We did as much as we could to try and negotiate with the administration at Touro, but found the situation did not adequately benefit both the hospital and the school. We are disappointed at the outcome.

Unfortunately, the students currently completing clinical rotations at Touro were informed prematurely about the difficulties by a physician at the clinical site, while we were in negotiations with the Administration over the contract. We did not intend for students to be informed this way and it is regrettable students found out about this situation before we were able to explain in depth what happened.

The students currently placed at the clinical site are able to complete their rotations and once they have finished, Touro will be removed from our website. We have made steps as quickly and efficiently as possible to reschedule the effected students with rotations in other hospitals in an effort to minimize the impact on their clinical scheduling. We regret any inconvenience or added stress this situation may have caused, and we are committed to you all as students.

While IAU is disappointed to see this affiliation with Touro Hospital dissolve, we are looking forward and we are currently in the process of replacing the Greenbook rotations for current and future clinical students.

Rspr41, it is regrettable that you are frustrated and if you feel you need further assistance or feel that we can be of help in any additional way, I encourage you to message me directly and I will ensure that you receive the communication and support needed with your transition and upcoming rotations.

All other questions, please feel free to send me a message and I am more than happy to respond.

I look forward to hearing from you,
IAU Admin

"We did as much as we could to try and negotiate with the administration at Touro, but found the situation did not adequately benefit both the hospital and the school. "

1) Correction I have spoken with administration at Touro who have been nothing but straightforward with all the students here and know that the situation did not benefit the hospital because third year students were getting shafted by an agreement that the school failed to organize properly. If I was the hospital I would not want to deprive third year students of core knowledge that we should be receiving especially if they are putting there name to it with an affiliation.

"Unfortunately, the students currently completing clinical rotations at Touro were informed prematurely about the difficulties by a physician at the clinical site, while we were in negotiations with the Administration over the contract. We did not intend for students to be informed this way and it is regrettable students found out about this situation before we were able to explain in depth what happened. "
2) So your saying that you would have told us LATER on after leases and contracts had been signed along with giving yourselves time to "formulate" an appropriate response? And what kind of explanation would you have given us? The one about how the school and the hospital were unable to come to terms and how and I quote from an IAU official who is in charge of clinical coordination "its not our fault Touro pulled out".

3) The real reason Touro pulled out from the contract was because the school had misrepresented the types of students that would be rotation through the hospital. The SCHOOL HAD TOLD TOURO that it would be fourth year students who don't need lectures and much teaching would be the ones rotating through the school. What they forgot to mention was that third year's would be rotation through as well.

The whole deal with greenbook rotations is there for a simple reason. Greenbook means its a TEACHING HOSPITAL WITH LECTURES. I NEED LECTURES as a third year student. However the school felt that those are not necessary and tried to start third year students here without having a clue how normal programs run rotations. Now if I was a hospital that was signing my name to students I would want them educated to the best of there abilities. Touro realized what was going on when they found out we were third year students WITH NO LECTURES and cut the agreement. I just find it funny that the school tried to say that DOCTORS that we were rotation with DIDN'T WANT TO ROTATE WITH US when that was never the case.

IAU2009 you have not been at the school for enough time to even comment about anything. I've been there for the NY visits and when the school was 20 students big. Talk to me in three years....

RSPR41,

You have come out lashing at the school several times in the past whenever there is a mishap. I think the school explained here what happened and offered their sympathy and willingness to help clinical students affected by the unfortunate development. Your postings are not acheiving anything but tarnishing the image of the very school that you attend. The administration's actions in good faith are evident off the response from the school official. Things could go wrong when it comes to something complex as affiliations between two institutions. That does not mean the end of the world. If you want to do all green books then you might have to travel around a little. That is the case with most caribbean schools including the big ones. Students do not sign apartment leases but go month to month. And if I understand correctly, IAU students are still doing rotations at Touro. So its not like you had to discontinue your clinic and move right now. From what the official is saying, subsequent clinics has been scheduled in other hospitals which are green books too ! So while I relate with your opinions, I think you should try and take things a bit more positively.

Eskimo in the past yes I tried to help the school and wrote to defend it but after being two years of false promises I no longer trust the schools words only actions. And so far the actions have been not up to par with what has been said. With regards to helping the school, points were brought up a month and half before the whole Touro incident regarding how things should be changed and none of that information was taken into account by the staff at IAU. No wonder a month later Touro realized the same things that the students here had brought up and decided to take action while the school acted to late to remedy a situation that could have been solved IN OCTOBER.

IAU is a business just like any other school and that makes them accountable for there actions. I will not support other people coming to this school in order to go through the same problems that all of my class has had to endure. Everyone focuses on results not just words and false promises.

Okay so you are a rotating student at Touro. Can you tell us the "points" brought up by you inorder to avoid the situation ? In other words, what do you think the administration should have done, in order to stay affiliated. Enlighten us please !

I have personally talked to current students at IAU and they have saved me a lot of time and money. They have continuously stated that IAU will lie and lie and tell you everything and anything you want to hear. I also took the time to look into the Touro deal and it is sad to say that it will not work out for IAU. From current students just yesterday I have heard that IAU was rejected from NY the first time for approval and IAU told students that they were accepted, that it was just now "all about the paper work" I understand that IAU is new but from what current students have voiced is that they must stay bc literally NO WHERE else will take there credits. It seems to me that IAU is REGRESSING instead of PROGRESSING (again, from what I have hear from current students on the island) I have also been in touch with a Prof. that worked there for 4 yrs and said to not waste your time nor your energy. Please ppl read and listen to what students that have been through this IAU SCHEME rather than ppl that have nothing better to do with there time than try to be such "humanitarians", but really all they are doing is hurting ppl in the long run (eskimo2008) THIS PERSON NEEDS TO GET A LIFE BC THE PPL THAT GO TO THIS SCHOOL ARE NOT WASTING THERE TIME ON HERE FOR PPL THAT ARE CLUELESS SUCH AS ESKIMO2008 to try to spread there LUDICROUS AND HAREBRAINED idiocracies. Please, if you want to honestly help ppl and not try to cover the truth up, go flip burgers you will make a lot of ppl very happy! You seem like the burger flipin type anyway! I'll take Xtra mayo with that one!!

You seem to know a lot about burger flippin... While I am taken aback by your attacks on me.... I have better things to do than sit here and rebutt your comments in a tone similar to that of yours.

I never tried to cover up the truth nor misled any one on vmd. It is not true that students cannot transfer out. Infact I know a number of students who have transfered out of the school.

IAU is a new school. I still reiterate my previous posts that new students should do their research and then decide whether it is a good choice for them or not. If it does not work for you then go to another school. But do your research there too. Every carib school has its positives and negatives and not all schools will work for everyone the same way.

Well, I must say, after reading online about IAU for 2 days, that, as a parent of an aspiring MD, that I'm going to do EVERYTHING possible to dissuade my baby from going to IAU. And what a drag that will be. She has her heart so set on being a doctor, but it looks as if IAU is NOT the way to go.
Thank you everyone (including IAU peeps) for all your information. A word to the IAU peeps; your words give you away.

I appreciate you taking the time out to do the research for your daughter. However, it is unfortunate that you must beleive everything that you read in an online forum, where people post anonymously. Please contact me and I would be happy to arrange a tour of the island and the IAU facilities in St. Lucia. It will also give you a chance to speak with some "real" students. I strongly urge you to make a decision after getting first hand information. Alternatively I can also put you in touch with other parents who have visited us and felt that IAU is THE way to go.
