While up to my ears in Step 1 review books, it's always nice to experience a humerous interlude to break the monotony.

On page 118 of the Road Map Genetics book, a misprint consisting of a single letter substitution (like a Single Nucleotide Polymorphism) changes everything. Instead of "isovaleric acidemia", it reads "isovaleric academia".

I was instantly reminded of our school. RM gave an OMIM reference (243500), so I looked it up. An excerpt includes "...retarded psychomotor development, a peculiar odor resembling sweaty feet, an aversion to dietary protein, and pernicious vomiting..."

Hmmm, how close does that come to my classmates? The treatment consists of eating more glycine and less leucine. The former is more concentrated in animal protein, the latter in plant protein. That explains why certain of my classmates during MD4 were always gorging themselves on steaks and shunning veggies. D'ya think it was subconscious?
