I think maybe 2 or 3 made the transition from Antigua to Manipal for the July 2008 class. I haven't heard anything back from them yet...

The program at AUA is 4 * 4 which is 16 months, where as at KMCIC it is 2 years

People have various reasons.

The main difference in KMCIC is two semesters per year versus three at AUA.

5th Sem and Clinicals are exactly the same.

We have 2 students in my batch who have transferred from AUA to KMCIC. The feedback I get from them is that they "prefer the pace that KMCIC goes, the facilities are better, and they feel that they are learning better here." From what they said, AUA didn't have much of a "campus feel" to it, where KMCIC does.

We have also had 1 person from our batch leave KMCIC for AUA. I haven't received any feed back from them.

It's good to hear that the transferred students like it there. I will be tranfering to KMCIC's 5th Sem from AUA

For the purpose of clarity you should identify the semester as BSc 5.

(KMCIC's Basic Science semesters are labelled: BSc 3 through BSc 6 corresponding to AUA's Med 1 through Med 4 semesters.)

Mr. Tipton,

If a student from another international med school is interested in transferring to AUA after passing Step 1, how likely is that?

Thanks for your assistance in advance.

Transfer is always a case-by-case basis. If you have a decent Step 1 score it helps. But we will treat your file the same as a new applicant: we need undergrad transcripts, med school transcripts, Step 1 result along with everything else (letters of recommendation...etc.). Admissions will perform an initial interview priior to sending your file to the Admissions Committee. Then your file will be sent to the Clinical Dean for a final decision on acceptance and placement if accepted.

"Twinning" = 2 campuses (Antigua and Manipal) for Basic Sciences. Both cohorts of students promoted into the same Clinical Curriculum in the US.

I would judge studies the same at both campuses since both cohorts of students have been doing well after coming back to the US. Facilities still weighs in Manipal's favor: the university is very very nice. With over 60 years of development you can see how much they have reinvested in the quality of education.

what if I'll be applying from another university that's located in India? I haven't done any undergrad because as you may know, medical school begins right after high school.

All applicants are evaluated using the same standards. If you began in an MBBS program you would either 1) start from the beginning or very close to the beginning or 2) pass Step 1 with your current school and aply to transfer as a Clinical student.

The very beginning or close to beginning? If I were to be finished basic sciences, but have not taken the step 1, would it not make more sense for me to use the resources that your school offers and take the step after that? Is that possible to transfer just before a semester or two of clinicals so I would be able to prep for step 1? Or is it one of the options you've mentioned?

If you began at an MBBS program odds are you would only be considered in transferring into our undergraduate curriculum since you will most likely not have the prerequisites for admission into Basic Sciences. The main exception to that is after passing Step 1. If you stay at your current school and pass Step 1 under their auspices, then our Basic Science Admissions Committee will render a decision ("Licensure Issues for lack of Prerequisites") but defer to our Clinical Dean for a final decision.

This would be much easier to explain over the phone. You can speak with me or another Director with a lot of experience working with transfers:
