Doing Premed here, worth it ?

I found a college through google and planning to do premed here and get a B.S degree in Biology. I chose here because the tution is really cheap for international students.

I can see how a Community College would be attractive for an international student: low tuition.

Where do you plan to attend Medical School? Since this is your next step after Premed you should determine where you do Premed by where you want to attend Medical School.

Or maybe you have another aim in mind?

I might go to a state university instead of a community college and I might go to a Med School in the states even though I am an international student. :D

Does this university sound right ??? :confused::confused:On their website - they have a biology department but no chemistry department (RED Flag - you need two semesters general chemistry and two semesters organic chemistry). They do not have these courses listed that I could find. They do have jazz guitar. Do your research find a full service school! I found the University of Wyoming as a place to do a degree in bio-tech research - issue they only had one prof in it and he did not teach. Google & web is not the place to find out about college and Universities. Most high schools have college and universities days for seniors. GO! Also go visit universities and colleges. It does make a difference! You will spend four years of your life there. This is critical to your future success - you need to be happy at the school you chose.

This area is out in the sticks - I have been there - It is also a Spanish speaking area of New Mexico settled in the 1600's that is not economically well off. They use to make rugs there and do bean farming and cattle. It is great if you want to go skiing in Taos. It is cold there nine months of the year. Pros - It is pretty there! Your chances for research and volunteer work would be very limited.

Ya, I think I should go to a bigger state school where I will be have more research opportunities.

If you are from New Mexico - Santa Fe area is good as is Los Alamos (think about the labs there) area down to Albuquerque for schools. I think the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque is very good school. They also have a great allied health school there with a medical school. There is plenty of places for research and volunteer there. It is also small enough to where you can know the profs there.

I think I would go to a bigger state university.US State Universities are the best kept secret in world wide education. They generally have lower tuition rates. Also if you life in the state for a year - you are a citizen of that state and qualify for state tuition rates. I many states that have lotteries (Ga and Fl for example) you get scholarships if you keep your grades high. My son went to UGA (University of Georgia) and kept the scholarship all four years. His GPA was a 3.8. My out of pocket expense was paying for his car insurance. The problem now is it is very difficult to get in these schools if you are out of state now. Concentrate on a good SAT score.

It varies state by state. The Universities will have that in application materials or on the websites.
