I just graduated from Carnegie Mellon and am looking to apply to the 4 main Caribbean Schools (saba, ross,AUC,SGU) and some US schools. My stats are Gpa 3.47, Science GPA 3.25, MCAT 24Q.Two publications, worked all 4 years in lab during undergrad, volunteering, and leadership. I am trying to decide which one of the 4 Carib. schools would be best for me. I dont really care much about the beauty of the campus, but more about the clinicals they offer 3rd and 4th year. I know saba costs the least but was wondering if there were any drawbacks. I love that there is a small class size, as that will allows for more professor and student interaction. How are the professors at SABA? In regards to clinicals, is it possible to schedule your core clinicals at one place, or do you end up going from city to city most of the time? I would love it if someone could also post something about their overall experience at SABA. Thank you for reading through this lengthy post and for your help.

Hi Oligo1,
I finished basic sciences from Saba in Dec 07, and currently on my 2nd clinical rotation. I have to say that Saba med students tend to be the more nicer, compassionate and humble that most of the other caribbean students and US med students I have come across. Also, I was worried that i wouldn't stack up against these big and mighty US students, but working with them and rounding with them really shows me that my knowledge and other Saba students are just as smart, if not smarter than these US students. Everyday the attending physician asks us questions and almost always i get the question correct whereas the US students most of the time just sit there and look confused and then ask me how i knew the answer. I think it's because a lot of the stuff we learned during basic sciences was taught in a way that really made sense and we learned in such a good environment (no distractions, wonderful professors who cared about each of us) that a lot of the information just sticks.

Hope that helps.
i really feel that at this point if I had an acceptance to a Canadian school, i would do Saba all over again, no question.

SABA is still simply the best value when compared among the "big 4." Consider the low tuition and living expenses. The island is still one of the cheapest to reside on when you take rent and other expenses into account. The class sizes are small and the school does have a proven track record in terms of its preparation. Given your stats, you shouldn't have any trouble succeeding in the basic sciences.

AUC and SGU are good options if you are willing to spend a great deal more for both tuition and living expenses. All of these Caribbean schools are very similar when it comes to licensing. All are accepted by 50 states and all are "Caribbean."
