Very well done Shrey. You're that bit closer to your MD.

Just out of interest. How are you getting on with the language? Are you finding enough time to study Czech and do you think you'll be at a high enough level by the time clinincals comes around that you'll be at a high enough level to communicate with patients without the Dr. having to do alot of translating as this is my big, big worry in studying abroad.

I know the language is tough to learn with all the cases and without frequent use in the real world you tend to forget everything.

Finally. Are you still happy choosing to study at Charles.

Thanks mate and well done again.

Thanks guys, and yes I'm really glad that I did choose Charles University because I've learned quite a bit this year. Quite detail in theory and the clincal aspect. I'm looking forward to the next year (ofcourse after a long break). It's a 5 more year road from here but I really don't mind it (perhaps that might change but by then I will have become "that bit closer to getting my MD degree" :)

For the English parallel, we're not really expected to be fluent in Czech. We should just be able to communicate with the patient regarding his or her medical condition/scenario. We have word lists that aid this purpose but fluency is definitely not expected.

Personally, because I'm a linguist by nature, I do like learning Czech (although the cases and endings and grammar rules can get quite tedious). I've met tons and tons of people in the 3rd year (which is the last year of czech) who hardly can speak a sentence of two without having to look it up in the word lists they get. It all depends on the individual. If you want to get more clinical interaction, then learning the language well would really help in some ways. But I wouldn't recommend it if it's at the expense of studying the core medical subjects (that being said many english parallel students usually opt for rotations back in their home country may it be UK/US/Canda etc. which is probably another reason why they don't really get motivated to learn the language).

Thanks...but that's not what my upperclassmen say. 2nd and 3rd year are much much harder and they weed out a lot more people than they do in the 1st year. So I guess the hardest part is yet to come.
