Hi everyone,

I thought for the next semester I'd ship a barrel with some items/food that are hard/too expensive on the island. I'm shipping from NY using Laparkan and the instruction packets mentions I can't ship liquids? Anyone have any good/bad experiences shipping canned liquids (ie red bull, monster, soda, canned foods). Any insight or warnings would really help. Thanks

Amerijet has its main regional hub in Houston at the intercontinental airport. Call and ask them about their rates. I heard the shipping time is approx two weeks, and you pick up the merchandise at DOM airport. This is their houston number 281-670- 1100.

Will a SI Swimsuit Model fit in a barrel?
Do you think customs will question the duct tape?

We used Tropical Shipping- way cheaper even if you get them to set up a pick up at your home. Good luck.

The new student counselor at ross said:

Shipping: If you would like to ship items, the post office, Amerijet, Fedex, and DHL all ship to the island. Some are more expensive than others, and some take longer than others. Please use the following address for packages: I HAVE RECEIVED COMPLAINTS ABOUT TROPICAL SHIPPING. DO NOT USE THEM.

what does that mean.???

I just spoke to American Airlines. They allow 70 lbs combined check baggage weight, and no excess bags to dominica. ..that sucks big time

There are companies that will ship large barrels, 4 ft or 5 ft high, that can hold up to 300 pounds. Companies that ship these items are Tropical Shipping, Laparkan, and Island Thrift.

Both! And we ship items on behalf of students through the other companies mentioned to save students time and energy. If you have questions about Island Thrift please PM or e-mail, otherwise let's get back to the topic of shipping!

Hi Mad6russell
You can order the barrel through different companies. depending where you are, you can even buy them in town. Asian stores or West Indian Stores usually have them. Uline has it too but much more pricey. We used e-bay to purchase ours. They are called fiber drums. Used ones are the cheapest way. If you don't have one of the other companies in your city, you can call Tropical Shipping and they will arrange for a truck to pick up the barrels from your house and send it to dominica directly. Make sure you write a good packing list and that you place the cheapest items on the top so that you don't get charged tons of customs fees. The customs people ALWAYS open up the barrels to see what's inside. PM me if you have other questions. Og yeah, if you do more than 6 barrels, doing pallets are cheaper.

Are there any suggestions about shipping stuff down to island (primarily from the east coast)? I'm pretty sure I can't easily fit everything I will need in 50 lbs of luggage (or less). Are there any companies I should look at or avoid?

I Just picked up a barrel from Laparkan today . They are telling me that it will take 5 weeks to get the barrell from NJ. Does it really takes 5 weeks and how about tropical shipping from NJ?

FYI, I got a quote from Amerijet, they would ship my smaller (55-gallon) barrel from to Los Angeles to Miami and then to Dominica for $150. It takes 1 -2 weeks depending which day of the week I would leave it at their drop point.

I shipped by DHL back to US (California), expensive though, but fast and on schedule. My advice is : start bring book home during break, 4th semester, keep only the book you need for board and sell others, it really not worth to ship them back. I spent more than $ 400.00 to ship back. I would have buy useful book cheaper in US. In case you want to ship something else then I don't know. But ask DHL, they has an agent downtown Postmouth
Good luck

Purchase used barrels or use the ones you have from shipping stuff down. Stuff them with stuff you wsnt to ship to Miami and then send it with Tropical Shipping. Call them to find out exactly what you need to do to send the barrels. Good luck.

I am starting in Sept. '08 as a nontraditional student (i.e. older). This thread has given me a lot of helpful information on shipping details; however, I have a related question that I hope someone can answer. Once you get there for orientation week and the barrels/boxes have arrived, are you left to your own devices to get things to your apartment? Does the school provide any transportation help? Thanks in advance.

You call one of the transport drivers, give him a written note to say you give him permission to pick up the parcels, give him money and he will deliver the barrels/boxes to your house. AND he should bring you a receipt. The going rate for picking up barrels is between $100EC to $200EC. Do not get a friend to pick up the barrels because you will end up paying so much more for customs than if you send someone reliable. Good luck.

how will i get notified, when my barrel reaches in Dominica?

Does Ross will notify you?

mad6russell
08-09-2008, 06:06 PM
No, Ross will not notify you. The barrels are not shipped to the school they are shipped to Roseau. the company you ship with should notify you via phone, so you need to call them when you receive your dominican phone number so they can get in touch with you

DrMS

Or call the company to find out when it will arrive. Tropical has been pretty good about keeping scheduled deliveries.
