RBC line of credit up to 150k
the when you get to third year you can apply for another one.
I think CMA has another one from National bank that you can use as well.. which may be a bit more money. Need a co-signer for both now.

I didn't know you could apply for a 2nd RBC line of credit..?
-would you mind letting me know which 2 bankers at each bank approved you for both the RBC loc & CMA loan?
-Did you need 2 different cosigners to get both?
-what kinds of assets/savings/credentials did they say your cosigners have to have?
You can privately message me with their contact info if you prefer. sometimes branches differ so maybe it's best to ask someone who has experience doing loans overseas.
thx
Would other Canadian students at SGU have other suggestions?

SGU was my first choice back in 2005, but after looking at a 250-300K for the M.D. and I only managed to get 150K CAD (which really was equal to 110K U.S. back then) I couldn't afford to go.
DONT GO DOWN THERE IF YOU DONT HAVE A CLEAR FINANCIAL PLAN ON HOW TO FOOT THE GIGANTIC BILL FROM SGU....
Unless you are somehow connected to a Stronach back in Canada,.. or have co-signers both in the U.S. and Canada... I suggest to review your choice of attending SGU.

Remember that Canadians also qualify for the International Peace Scholarship/Loan from SGU. Most people I know that got it received around $20000, but I've heard of people receiving as much as $70000. I think Canada student loans will give you around $90000 maximum (depending on what province you're from -- I can't find the exact amount they'll give you), and you can also apply for a line of credit or something like that. i think the school is working on finding us some private lenders...

Hi,
Yes, that was what I meant. If I had Canadian & US cosigners, what loan companies/banks can I get money from to go to school abroad? Do students know of any?

$90,000?? Wow, do you know if BC students get this much?
How are you personally paying for SGU?
As for the Peace Scholarship, do they award you anything if you're going into premed(year3)-->MD program (or into the MPH-->MD program)?
And, can you apply for the Scholarship before being accepted?
thanks

Well I actually worked all last fall and ended up making enough money to pay for first term's tuition myself. I took out loans for second term and Canada/Alberta student loans gave me $20000 for this term and $10000 for term 3/4. I also got a couple small scholarships from a couple of cultural organizations I am part of to help cover the cost of flights, food, etc. My family would also give me money for my birthday or Christmas to help out also. I am now going to try to get the student line of credit from RBC or whatever it is to make up for the rest. I'm not sure is BC students get that much since I'm from Alberta, but I'm sure you guys qualify for a hefty sum either way. I know i did get a letter back from student loans telling me that how much funding i will be able to apply for in the coming years, and for me, the max. was around $90000. BC may be different since all provinces do the loan thing differently.
As for the Peace scholarship, i think you need to be enrolled in med to apply for it, but i could be mistaken. You can apply for it early, and the last day to do so is the first day of first term, but you have to be accepted. Admissions sends you a financial aid package in your e-mail when you are accepted (I forget, but i think i had to have my financial aid counseling session before I got the e-mail), that has the scholarship form you can print out, fill out and fax in.

I believe Alberta (Provincal) loan has a maximum limit of 95k loan, where as the Government of Canada loan maxs out at 90k. I donno the specifics, but the loan that you get when you apply would be a combination of the provincal and federal. For my upcoming 2008 year I managed to get 9k Federal and 23k provincal, so at this rate the loan will cap out in year 3... :(
I have the site for loan application for Alberta if anyone wants. I'll have to send via pm as I don't have enough post count.
ok, it seems you can get quite a bit from provincial/federal loans. i tried to find out how much BC residents can get from the studentaidBC website and I came up with ~17,000/year. It might cap off once my time limit for funding is over.
Maybe BC residents can verify this, as sometimes what i think I can get is different from what i'd actually get cuz I might need to lower the amount I'm asking my relative to cosign for me so I want to be sure?

You guys may be misinformed. You can not get Provincial and National student loan. Only National. Do a search and see what was already said. (OF COURSE THIS MAY HAVE CHANGED SINCE I LOOKED INTO IT).
Also disagree with the person who discourages people from going to Medicine if they can't afford it all. As long as you have a co-signer the bank is willing to lend you the money.
If SGU is too expensive, look into SABA. It has a good reputation of getting Canadians back for residency in Canada. Also it is about half the price.

Well, I recieved 2 loan certificates when I applied for a student loan from the Alberta Student Finance website, one being a Provincial one, and the other Federal. The details of the funding even lists them as separate, and like i stated, with the Federal being 9000 in a year, and the Provincial 23000. Of course this could vary from province to province. The two loans seem to be lumped together when calculating the limit you can borrow, if that's what you mean CANeh.

Which specialist at which bank approved you? Can you (or any other students who were approved) give me their contact info? i have not had much success, so was hoping for help on finding bankers who would do this (I might need 2 lines of credit so the more bankers at different banks who have approved students recently, the better!). You can privately message me if you want
thx

Really Alberta give you provincial and national. Did you get a total of 32K per year. That is great.
Hint to others... move to alberta and get alberta residency before starting at SGU.
Can someone who has OSAP or BC student load confirm if they get provincial and national amounts? I don't qualify for Canadian student loans.

Call your RBC bank.. ask them about a professional line of credit for medical students. Do a search on valueMD.. search button is on top.

I went through the Bank of Montreal. At first they were giving me 150K, it wasnt going to cover my 4 years at all. But then my co-signer and I requested for them to increase the line of credit to 200K. Luckily we got it! so there may not be a need for a second line of credit.
Here is the other break down of the money that i recieved:
BMO: 50,000/year
OSAP:10000/year
With the line of credit, it all depends on your co-signer. How strong is his/her credit and how clean is his/her credit history. Also the scholarship from SGU helped out a lot. depending on your stats/financial need, they will give you money. Canadian loans are there to fill in gap for living expenses/accommodations.

Are you referring to the Peace Scholarship? How much did you receive?
The Peace Scholarship is a great source of funds. All Canadians should apply.

that depends on the province you are a resident of. for ex for ontario, it's OSAP. Canada Student Loans and Grants (http://www.hrsdc.gc.ca/en/learning/canada_student_loan/index.shtml)
this site should give enough info. Good luck.
o and canadians studying outside of canada get no grants/scholarships. they are only approved for the government loan. For the residents of ontario, the max they can get it 210/week. I m not too sure of the other provinces.
