Hi Fellow SGUers:

I have received tremendous help from this site and realize that it is time to give back. Perhaps, we can start a thread on moving in general. As we all know, moving is expensive (see below) and any tips are helpful. It can be about moving across the US, shipping across the US, moving down to GND and/or moving from GND.

1. I had to ship some stuff across the US today (from the East coast to the West Coast). The cheapest method is USPS. I packed everything into a box (64lbs) total and the cost is only $46. No bad. I have no problems paying for it. HOWEVER, since I packed everything into an oversized box, they charged me an extra surcharge of $74.87. Now, that's crazy! It happened to my second box as well. The total weight was only 50lbs and the cost was only $40.73. However, since it was oversized, I had to pay an extra surcharge of $80.15.

If I had used an non-oversized box, I could have saved on the surchages ($155.02). According to the USPS, I should have used a 20x20x20 box. Definitely check with your local post office on what is a non-oversized box before packing!!

I will definitely remember this lesson when I come back to the States for rotation/residency moving!!

Feel free to add more tips :)

Use Amerijet to cargo stuff to Grenada - it's reasonable. A 50lb suitcase would cargo for $90 from Houston to Grenada.

Alternatively, for those who are connecting via LIAT after starting with AA, and are worried about LIAT only allowing 50 lbs, you can bring along 2 bags via AA, and cargo the extra bag from whatever island you are on to Grenada.

I think FedEx is the best and easiest way to deliver boxes. They're friendly too.
