Hey people....I was wondering if anyone has heard of the 3 Skypephone (link below). It is not available in the USA but if I can get my hands on one, will it work in St Maarten? ie will it be able to act as a cell for the island and skype phone for home?

3 Skypephone. Skype is now mobile. Calling your world is free. (http://www.skype.com/allfeatures/3skypephone/)

Thanks

I think its just a regular cell phone with skype capabilities... meaning you have to have a wifi connection to use skype

Highly doubtful with 3g support... but if its GSM it should work on the island

I'm not sure what a 3 network is, but it's what the phone runs on.. It seems to be UK specific. I know, from the telcell website, that it is possible to get gsm based internet. So, if you want skype on your gsm phone your best bet is to get a blackberry, or other phone, that runs skype's mobile software... and then pay for the internet usage; However it is doubtful that it will be worthwhile.. The only other option is to get a secondary wifi device which has skype: psp, or a skype wifi phone... As someone who has used wifi based devices from the school to make calls. You should know that the badwidth varies dramatically during the day: and a result calls are not reliable enough.

I had the 3 Skype phone in the UK. 3 is one of the mobile carriers in Europe (like Vodaphone or Orange). It was pretty cool. Used the 3G phone/data network over there (NOT WIFI). Interestingly enough, sometimes the 3G would downgrade to just G (poor signal strength, presumably) and the Skype service would still work...

It's basically the same Skype that you put on your Pocket PC, except NO WIFI is needed.

It's also a very boring GSM phone as well (SIM card, etc.) I actually have my old phone from the UK (with Uk charger), if you'd like to try/buy it for yourself. No guarantee it will work on the island, though :)
