im trying to apply for the jan'09 class and here are my stats:
MCAT : V-5, PS-7, WS-N, **-9 --- 21N
undergrad gpa: 3.4
science gpa: 3.35
started out as an engineering major, then changed to microbiology and did really well in many 400 level classes. 100+ hours of volunteer work, and 2 years of research. my gpa has a good trend (rising from 2.8 -> 3.4) and i did really well in science. my concern is my MCAT score. how much weight do u think they put on the MCAT? and does a high ** section score help my case?

To start off you are about to get blasted with hate messages for either not running a search or for not posting in the "what are my chances" thread, not by me...I don't care, but from most anyone else who reads this. Next time search for answers.....GPA and science GPA are good slightly better than mine but your MCAT is a bit low even for a caribbean school. These schools at least the big 3 are getting more a more competitive which means you might have to retake it if you are not able to get in. Your ** section of the MCAT does not mean much of anything since it is the bio section and as a pre-med you should be able to score 9's with ease. The verbal section is what you would really need to bring up at least a couple of points. Write strong essays and have good letters and I think you would have a good chance. In all honesty I would hold off and apply for the may class and you will have better timing for your step exams compared to the jan class. Good luck............

that thread is closed so its all good.......decent gpa, brutal mcat.......you can apply and see what happens keeping in mind that a higher mcat score will likely punch your ticket to med school
with a 3.4 and a 21, i think you're very borderline. improve your mcat if you want a chance at getting in.
