Sure sure sure.... Very sure this has probably been addressed somewhere, but I have searched and I really don't know what to search for on this, so....

Am I to take it that the length of clinical electives are dependent on the site you go to, or does each have a specific length that correlates with the elective itself?

For example, I know that Neuro and FP are required 4 weeks for AUC graduation, but what about GI or ID? Do they have a certain length associated with them or is it a site-by-site deal?

Thanks for putting up with the aggro,

JD

It all depends on the site, but there is little variation it seems.

Most places will give you 2 or 4 weeks for electives. AFAIK, AUC wants 4 weeks of Neuro and 4 weeks of FP (I haven't taken either yet). If you take FP at a place that calls it a "core", it might be 6 weeks, which is OK. (And I think if you take it in Michigan, it might be 8 weeks, because all cores in Michigan are 8 weeks, but I might be totally wrong on this point.)

I have heard of people doing 2 week cardio electives where all you do is read EKGs. I was planning to do a path elective of 2 weeks of strictly Fine Needle Aspirations (but didn't get it). I am getting a two week elective with the psych core rotation attending I had. I may do adolescent or addiction psych for those two weeks. I think the two weekers are usually in a subject that can be well-sampled in that amount of time.

The vast majority of electives are 4 weeks. Some sites only do four weeks.
