View Full Version : Having a car vs not having a car

I have read some responses where having a car is convenient and where it isn't really necessary to have a car to get around. I will be starting in May, but I won't be shipping down a car and may not try leasing a car. How hard will it be for buying groceries if I don't have a car or doing other things? Help. :?

Aloha,
What a helpful post.
From what I understand it is doable to not have a car but rather inconvinent. Apparently there is a store near by that's small, but if you want to go to the bigger store you will have to take the unreliable bus or ask a friend if they are going too. I am in the same delemia. I know it is heard of that a group of students will share a car.
How about a motorbike or a scooter? Obviously cheaper but is it practical and accessable on the island?

When looking at your whopping 10 posts compaired to the over 600 posts Jon has contributed....with a little effort, people would find their answers if they just did a search. Plain and simple.

Define unreliable?
There is no time schedule, no, but there are tons of buses. I have never seen one broken down, and provided you are willing to wait a little while (or start walking), you will see one within usually 20 minutes or so. Mights and Sundays are quite a bit slower, tho.
It's all a matter of priorities.

Aloha,

Hey, there are people who are resourceful and don't mind doing a little leg work to find answers for themselves. Then there are those that need to be spoon-fed. I am sorry if this seems harsh, but after answering the same questions about the same subjects repeatedly, it occasionally wears thin. I have thought in the past that it would be a good idea to have a "sticky" in our AUC forum to answer such FAQ's. If you fall into the former group and have placed some effort into researching the forum for answers on your own and could not find help on a specific topic, then please accept my sincere apologies. If you fall into the latter group, however, I reitterate...two words..."FORUM SEARCH".

Sorry that was only the impression I had gotten from doing a forum search and reading old posts.

Well, I've only spent 4 days on SXM but I can't imagine living there without a car. Cars are cheap down there, buses cheaper. It all boils down to personal preference.
