hey,
does anyone have any good suggestions for not getting cockroaches? we have had a couple recently, and i clean the house like crazy, and never leave food or crumbs or anything around.
does anyone have any ways to get rid of them?
thanks.

I sealed and bugbombed my apartments on the island multiple times. Combining that with making sure no food was left out also helped. I actually kept all foods that were not in cans in the refrigerator due to other vermin that would try to invade the products (it is sad when I open the brownie pack and realize it somehow became flooded with little flying bugs). Unfortunately, one can't control the adjacent apartments, but hopefully bug bombing and poisoning can keep them at bay.

sounds like you are doing the most important things. next i would check for any openings around your door jambs and windows. my door didn't exactly make a tight seal with the jamb so i got some foam weatherstrip and duct time to fix it. maybe you could try complaining to the landlord depending on where you live

The cockroaches seem to like to squirt through the bottom of some doors that have a wide space between the base and the floor. A door seal from Ace will take care of this.

You can buy Ortho Home Defense at Ace, it works great. You just spray it around your place and you'll be bug free for a long time.

Which will be attempted by one of them if you make the mistake of feeding a cat near your apartment door.

I used Raid and just sprayed alot of it near the door and the perimeter of the rooms in the apartment. When they cross it they'll eventually die. Raid was my best friend on the island, and the first thing I did when I moved into my apartment in NYC I did the same thing with the raid.

Even better than Raid, they have BOP on the island. I do not think the stuff is legal in the US, but it can kill anything. Spraying that around the perimeter of the apartment is an additional way to keep them bugs out.

That's because they only come out at night, when you are on call

Gel worked like magic in NYC. You use it once and it keeps the place clean for like 3-5 months

NYC has a tremendous roach and rat problem, no joke. Google the topic and look for NY Times, NY Post, or Daily News articles talking about it. Doesn't matter if you live on Park Ave or the ghetto, that many people living close together with limited place to store garbage will attract roaches. If you live in an apt building with a garbage chute, take a look down the chute with some light and you'll see the floor of the chute moving (those are roaches). When I lived in the city, I used numerous Raid roach baits placed strategically around my apt and had my the exterminator spray my apt every time the building notified us the exterminator was coming (which was about 3 times a month). the Raid baits were effective longer than the 6 months listed. However, at first all the big roaches came out to die, but after a couple of days I didn't see any roaches. If I did see a roach, it was tiny one that was dead.

The lizards are your friends against the insects, so don't kill them, learn to co-exist with them.

I live in a Solutions building, 3rd floor. Being higher up helps a little.
Moved in January, Roaches. Bought door strips from ACE, placed a full 12 pack of 6-month roach motels strategically around the place. Roach free ever since. Only problem are tiny little bugs attracted to cooking oil/pasta. Started zip-locking Pasta boxes. Once in a while find 1 or 2 little guys in the cabinet near the oil. Nothing can be done. These people couldn't build a proper building to saver their lives. Cracks in the windows where small bugs can get in, can't seal them without preventing the windows from being able to be opened. Also cracks in the weird door locking mechanisms.
Overall though, surprisingly bug free for this climate/building. Now if only the Apartment was actually Air conditioned as advertised when we signed our lease. (small bedroom unit only, will not cool apartment)

Does RAID work on the cats?If you use enough force with the can, you may be able to exterminate the kitties. If you miss, the cat will not be happy.

Sounds like Rising Sun! As a 20 month victim of Solutions, I sympathize. Certainly there will be space for Mr. Landcruiser in Bolgia 5 of the Eighth Circle of Hell (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Divine_Comedy#Eighth_Circle)...
